Track when paid subscribers churn

September 19, 2025

Quick one today! We've added a new way to track when your paid subscribers decide to move on.

Every paid subscriber now has a churn date that automatically gets set when they cancel their subscription. This means you can finally answer questions like "How many people churned last month?" or "Which subscribers churned right after that controversial essay?" without having to dig through Stripe dashboards or piece together cancellation emails.

The churn date shows up right in your subscriber details, and you can filter your entire subscriber list by churn dates to spot patterns. Maybe you'll notice people tend to churn after three months, or that certain content correlates with higher retention. Having this data at your fingertips makes it easier to understand what's working (and what isn't) with your paid offering.

For those of you using our API, you can now pull churn dates programmatically too — perfect for building your own retention dashboards or syncing this data with your analytics tools. And if you're already tracking subscriber lifecycle events through webhooks, the churn date will be included there as well.

This is part of our ongoing work to give you better insights into your paid subscriber base. We know that understanding churn is crucial for growing a sustainable newsletter business, and now you have one more tool to help with that.

Buttondown is the last email platform you’ll switch to.
