Updates from October

Email- and web-only content blocks

Some things are best read in an inbox. Or in a browser. Or in the physical world — a dog-eared book, spine worn with age and care, quietly inviting you to open it up, pour yourself a nice cup of tea and your favorite jazz record, and while away an afternoon.

…We can’t really help with that third one yet, but on the first two we have positive news. You can now block off sections of content to be only accessible in the archives (or in the email):

An email newsletter with a salutation and opening paragraph followed by an emailwall, with the content below the emailwall not visible in the web archives.
Frank’s ferret is not SAG eligible.

These dynamic content blocks only appear based on where subscribers view your newsletter. Content within an emailwall, for example, will only be visible from an inbox. Anything written inside a webwall will only show up in your web archives.

Hop over to the changelog for more details or jump straight into a few experimental emailwalls.

Give everyone you know notes

Want to add a note to everyone who subscribed to your newsletter on the same day as a conference you attended? Or maybe everyone your mom forced to sign up? Now you can, thanks to bulk notes.

Open your Subscribers view, click the checkbox next to everyone you want to add the note to, and click Add note. You can even bulk add metadata.

The bulk notes announcement goes into more detail and, as always, we’d love to hear what you’re using this for or what you’d want to see us to add!

From the blog

The Buttondown blog received a big facelift this month, as well as another round of delightful reads. Foremost among them was an interview with Jenny Zhang, full of much-needed optimism and witticisms. Followed up by the fascinating history of an email-based AI music recommender that launched in 1994.

If you have a WordPress website, we wrote up a walkthrough of how you might automate every part of your newsletter publishing pipeline. Or, regardless of where your website is hosted, or if you even have one, how to clean your list and cut through the noise.

Other stuff

  • Your subscribers can now manage their subscription to your newsletter through Buttondown’s main login page.

  • Rearrange columns in your Emails and Subscriber dashboards by clicking and dragging them wherever you want.

  • Buttondown has completed its Czech localization, jupí!
