Teotihuacan, outside of Mexico City

Formation № 003: To Cull or Not to Cull?

Our sidebar in Aphera, showing the new culling buckets, All, Starred, and Rejected

The answer is definitely cull!

This is Formation, the newsletter written by the humans that make Aphera, the upcoming Mac photo editor, which we’re really excited about.

We just released beta 9 to our small but mighty pool of beta users, which is chock-full of improvements and newness. In particular, we’d been internally debating how culling, rating, and picking your best photos might work in the app after a few variants of the feature.

This is Formation, the newsletter from Aphera, the upcoming photo editor for Mac. We are really glad you’re here. You get the first scoop on things.

Beta

Thank you to everyone who replied in about getting beta access. It was much more than we imagined! We’re approaching it slow: about 10 people at a time so we’re not overwhelmed with feedback, and can develop a good rapport with our testers. We’ll open it up again to another batch soon.

Get in Formation № 001

Well, hello. We're making Aphera (fka PhotoEditor), an upcoming Mac photo editing app. You're receiving this because you're curious what we're up to, or want to get your hands on it.

Who's making it?

Ryan Carver, Naz Hamid, and Juan Pablo Zambrano. We love making images. We all come from working in creative tooling. Naz wrote about his own backstory with digital photography — it explains a lot about why we're building this.
