Formation № 003: To Cull or Not to Cull?
How we came to an elegant culling solution based on beta tester feedback and respecting XMP standards.

The answer is definitely cull!
This is Formation, the newsletter written by the humans that make Aphera, the upcoming Mac photo editor, which we’re really excited about.
We just released beta 9 to our small but mighty pool of beta users, which is chock-full of improvements and newness. In particular, we’d been internally debating how culling, rating, and picking your best photos might work in the app after a few variants of the feature.
Following our users’ feedback, and the data, we built a culling solution which we feel is elegant, respects the XMP standard, and stays true to our own ethos for Aphera to be fast and powerful in the pursuit of flow.

In support of this post, and our changelog, we now have a more public-facing website that reveals our Now (blog and changelog), a burgeoning About page, and our Docs, which should give you a decent idea of what the app is capable of. Of course, there’s nothing like actually using the app, and we’re working really hard to push towards 1.0.
We’re excited about beta 10, and probably a few more after that, but we’ve started discussing our launch plans in earnest, and it’s wild to think that it’s getting closer.
Ohayo! おはよう
Naz recently revisited a trip to Japan in 2016, re-processing the images in Aphera from a trusty old Sony RX100 M3 to see how they’d hold up. He’s quite happy with the results. Take a look here.
Say Hello
As always, our inbox is open if you’re curious about anything. We’re very thankful you’re here and eager to try the app, and the interest has meant a lot to us. We have a long way to go still in terms of everything, but one step after another.
Thanks,
Juan, Naz, & Ryan.
