📰 News this Week
📝 Spokes & Living Streets Edinburgh write to Council over dangerous ‘closed’ crossings at roadworks

If you’ve travelled through the Meadows recently, you might have spotted that poorly managed works on Marchmont Road and at Summerhall have opted to ‘close’ toucan crossings for pedestrians and cycle users, in order to try and manage vehicle traffic issues through roadworks - including dangers from red light jumping.
Of course, people on foot and on bike still need to get around, so instead are forced to cross ad-hoc and without the usual safe affordances to do so. A public letter to the City of Edinburgh Council’s ‘Citywide road coordination manager’ has been sent late on Sunday evening, 14th June to prompt action for the vulnerable road users everyone says are a priority, while issues like this continue to put the ‘sus’ in ‘sustainable transport hierarchy’.
📝 Closure Complaints Letter »🚋 Trams update: north-south route consultation report now available
As per an email from the City of Edinburgh Council this week:
Trams from Granton to the Edinburgh BioQuarter / Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Beyond Consultation and Market Research Report
A report detailing the analysis of the consultation and market research responses to the Trams from Granton to the Edinburgh BioQuarter / Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Beyond project will be discussed at the Transport and Environment Committee on 18 June 2026.
This report is now live and can be viewed here [PDF]
Please note that this report is for scrutiny only and that a further report containing a Strategic Business Case (SBC), developed using Transport Scotland’s Guidance on the Development of Business Cases, will be presented to Transport and Environment Committee on 10 September 2026 for a decision on whether to progress further to the Outline Business Case (OBC) stage.
This will potentially be discussed at this week’s Transport and Environment Committee meeting - see more below.
🤝 June Transport & Environment Committee meeting this Thursday, 18th June

🏰 Local Bits
🚂 Fantastic to see strong words on the Powderhall Link campaign from Ben Macpherson MSP this week:
AN SNP minister has said a disused rail line in Edinburgh must be converted into a public pathway “sooner rather than later”. In response to a renewed campaign to transform a disused train track in North Edinburgh into an active travel route, Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith MSP Ben Macpherson has given it his backing.
“I’m very supportive of converting the Powderhall railway path into a new active travel route, and know many of my constituents are too,” he said.
“I look forward to working with all the bodies involved to make this happen sooner rather than later.” — more at The National (Press Reader) »

⚙️ A new round-up from Spokes follows a workshop on Monday last week to ‘re-imagine’ Princes Street, following on from the Transport Committee’s rejection of a previous line of improvements lacking meaningful change:
“A major council workshop of some 100 councillors, officers, experts and community representatives (including Spokes) to discuss the future of Princes Street and the Waverley Valley was held on 8 June. Specifically on Princes Street, the discussion boiled down to two alternatives: the officers’ preferred “Ambitious Pragmatism” solution which comprises footway repaving and some other enhancements… or “Complete Rethink” which means rethinking the roadspace, to give much improved pedestrian space and segregated bike lanes. — Spokes article »
🤔 Along similar lines - an excellent article from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (‘SPICe’) this week takes on more broadly ‘Thinking about Transport’ and the intersection of the many issues that contribute to where we are today - a really valuable look at some of the key effects that a lot of folk take for granted as immovable obstacles or facts of life, rather than by-products of choices in urban and transport planning.
⛔ A major closure on the Water of Leith walkway, from the City of Edinburgh Council:
I write to inform you that we have, unfortunately had to close the Water of Leith Walkway at Kinauld Tan Works Footbridge as a hole has appeared in the bridge. There is no through route over this bridge in either direction and the suggested diversion is via Lanark Road West.
Presently, we do not know the scale of the damage or the underlying cause, this will be investigated in due course. Meantime, we need to protect the public and have therefore made the difficult decision to close the bridge to ensure public safety. While the hole is currently relatively small in size, it is still big enough for someone to get their foot caught in it or for a horse to get a hoof caught. Also, we do not know how this hole will develop over the weekend and it may increase in size. We are therefore asking everyone to respect this closure and for their own safety and the safety of others to use an alternative route.

❤️ Charlotte’s Tandems are looking for help in Edinburgh:
We lend, throughout the UK, at no cost (i.e. for free), tandems and tag-alongs (trailer bikes) to (and only to) people with disabilities or additional needs, who are unable to ride a bike safely on their own, so that they can enjoy the wonders of cycling.
In other words we provide all-ability, adapted, inclusive cycling for adults and children who are disabled, have special needs, SEN, SEND or impairments, such as Autism, Down's Syndrome, visual impairments, learning or physical difficulties.
They’ve published a Facebook post in which they are seeking a new ‘helper’ in Edinburgh - you can read about this role here, and a commenter shared:
As a former helper in Edinburgh, there are a couple of things you need to know if you are interested in taking this on.
- You need to be able store several tandems when they are not being used.
- The riding skills of who want to borrow a tandem are highly variable, so you may need to try to teach them how to ride a tandem, which is not like riding a solo bike.
If you can help, do get in touch with them.

📪 Road closure info — many thanks to regular contributor Robbie for collating and preparing these:
🚧 Potterow: Segregated Cycle Lane southbound obstructed at Crichton St for emergency Scottish Power works until further notice, possibly ending later this week.
🚧 Henderson Street: Section of Leith Connections segregated path closed between Parliament St and Tolbooth Wynd for Scottish Water works from Monday 15th June for 1 week.
🚧 Telfer Subway: Access to Orwell Terrace closed for Dalry footway improvement from today, Monday 15th June for 1 week. A signed diversion is to be provided via Dalry R. and Dalry Community Park.

🏖️ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane. Works expected to recommence today, Monday 15th of June until mid-August. Be aware of resurfacing machinery in the road and consider using the footway.
🌉 Water of Leith Path: Kinauld Tan Works Footbridge by Currie closed due to a hole in the bridge deck. A diversion is suggested via Lanark Rd, which may be unsuitable.

🚧 Marchmont Rd: Toucan crossing between Meadows path and Marchmont Rd on obstructed by barriers due to nearby Scottish Power roadworks.

🚧 Royal Park Terrace: Road closed at Clockmill Lane for Scottish Water repairs Friday 19th June. If you’re travelling between Abbeyhill and Meadowbank, London Rd cycle lanes may offer an alternate route.
🚧 Leamington Terrace: Closed at Bruntsfield Pl this Saturday 20th June for 1 day for Cityfibre works. It may be possible to enter the street northbound, but no traffic light will be provided for exiting southbound onto Bruntsfield Pl. Nearby Viewforth may offer an alternate route.
🏗️ George Street: Section of CCWEL closed eastbound for a crane lift morning of this Sunday 21st June.
🚧 Queensferry Road: Advisory cycle lane westbound closed at Orchard Park for council drainage surveys for up to 5 days. Update 1st June: Works delayed until at least 22nd June.
Long Term Closures:
🏗️ Eyre Place: Road closed including contraflow cycle lane at Rodney St until end June. It should still be possible to access Dundas St from George V Park, however be aware of a nearby road closure on Hamilton Pl if you’re travelling between Stockbridge and Broughton.
🛒 Cramond Road South: Section of NCR 1 by Tesco and roundabout by Davidsons Main Park obstructed by resurfacing and footway widening until 20th June. If you’re travelling to Davidson’s Mains Park, it may be better to stay on NCR1 to avoid a dismount.
🎾 Gyle Park: Path between Glenmuir Rd and Glasgow Rd closed until the end of October 2026 for construction work. If you’re heading to Tesco, the path by David Lloyd gym may offer an alternate route.
🏗️ Dundee St: Segregated cycle lane remains closed westbound at bridge over West Approach Rd due to overrunning building demolition work.
🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge is closed to cars, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.
🏗️ St Marks Path: Section of Quietroute 20 between McDonald Road and Warriston Path impacted by CEC Powderhall redevelopment works. The path is expected to remain open during the majority of the construction programme. Until a temporary path is provided, exercise caution at manned crossing gates when passing through the site.
🚦 Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until late Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.
🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.
🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

🎉 Events and Happenings
📆 Upcoming / Ongoing

🚴 One of the simplest forms of bike racing is the 'time trial', where you ride a set distance and see how long it takes.
Edinburgh Road Club run a mid-week event on the quiet A199 from Macmerry towards Haddington (~10 miles). This is open to all; you don't have to be in a cycle club, you don't need a specialist bike, just be ready to put in some effort & talk to some nice people.
12-18 year olds can take part with parental permission, there's no upper age limit.
This will be running each Wednesday in June until 1st July, before taking a break.
Why not give it a go ? After all, two years ago Lauren Dickson began her cycle racing career on this event; today she's in the top 15 of the women's Giro D'Italia - imagine what taking part could do for you !

The bicycle, more than any other object, represents the perfect fusion of ingenuity, elegance and passion, values deeply rooted in Italian culture. The Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh is proud to present a temporary exhibition that aims to recount the history and identity of Italian cycling.
The free exhibition, which will run from 11th June – 16th July, features 12 significant bicycles, including 6 historic models from the Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum Collection. Also 6 models on loan from Italian companies that have shaped the history of cycling. Among the bicycles on display will be an early 20th-century Bianchi racing bike with a block brake and a Legnano bike ridden by Gino Bartali in the 1938 Tour de France. — more information »

🙏 Call from Edinburgh RC for bike donations via Facebook:
Bikes (especially road) and other kit needed for Portobello High School girls cycling programme.
We’re looking for donations of road cycling kit and affordable bikes suitable for girls aged 11–16 as we continue to grow our exciting new girls’ cycling programme at Portobello High School.
The programme brings together a diverse group of girls from S1–S4, many of whom are completely new to cycling. The girls have already participated in a road session at Fife Cycle Park and are heading to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome this week. Their enthusiasm has been amazing, and Linda McLean has been fantastic with them.
Our aim is not only to create opportunities for girls to get involved in cycling but also to develop a blueprint that helps schools work more closely with local cycling clubs and embed cycling within the curriculum.
Sustainability is central to our approach. Working with The Bike Station, we are refurbishing and building bikes and investing in a few hours a week of a bike mechanic rather than simply buying new equipment.
We’re looking for:
- Road bikes (11–16 year olds)
- Helmets, shoes and cycling clothing
- Affordable second-hand equipment
- Sponsors for bikes or riders - if you’d like to donate, sponsor a rider, get involved, or simply find out more please contact Greg McDowall - Headteacher - Greg.mcdowall@portobello.edin.sch.uk
Every donation will help to remove barriers and create opportunities for young people to access our sport. Thanks very much.

🚲 The Bike Station - looking for volunteer support 🚲
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new volunteers to support our mission!
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
Current opportunities seeking support are 3-4 hour shifts on Saturday afternoon in Gorgie, as well as Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning in Tollcross.
🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are exploring the option of expanding the reach of our FYOB sessions, where people pay £6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, seeing whether with more energy in the team if expansion is suitable. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants.
If any of these roles are of interest, please contact [jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk](mailto:jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk) to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
