🪨 How North Edinburgh got its cycle paths

Grit, determination, hard graft and relentless chasing abound in this phenomenal deep dive by local historian and cycle activist Andy Arthur — documenting the incredible work by Spokes and friends to turn the former railway lines of North Edinburgh from potential new roads into the network of traffic-free paths that now abound there, from their formation in 1977 onwards. The timeline is interesting too - some of these only coming to fruition fairly recently.
Really, truly worth your time - especially to understand that grassroots campaigning (sometimes extending as far as the literal laying of paths!) by the likes of Spokes and others is what got us to where we are now. People-powered pedal power.
⛏️ Threadinburgh Article »🚂 The ‘Powderhall Link’ community campaign begins
At the tail-end of How North Edinburgh got its cycle paths, Andy ruminates about the future of some of the last inactive railway line in Edinburgh:
“At the time of writing the NEPN has almost completely rehabilitated all former railway trackbeds in north Edinburgh, with one glaring omission. Until 2016 a section of railway remained in use as far as Powderhall, where the Council’s waste transfer station sent landfill by rail to East Lothian once a week. That depot was demolished in 2019 but beyond its security fences there still lies three kilometres of technically active railway track – and the opportunity for a significant extension of the path network to the southeast.
“This would provide a further bridge across the Water of Leith and take you through the most densely populated neighbourhood in Scotland all the way to Meadowbank (and beyond?) Despite regular political support (such as inclusion in the SNP’s 2026 election manifesto for the Scottish Parliament) and enthusiastic noises from the Council there has been disappointingly little progress in the decade since the last train ran. Not for the first time does an arm of local government find itself in Kafkaesque legal and financial wrangling with a state-owned railway agency over disused tracks in Edinburgh… And not for the first time has a group of interested citizens felt the need to try and get things moving again with this opportunity.”
There are occasional noises about this route - about Network Rail being happy enough to hand over, about assessments being carried out on the bridges that the council would adopt the maintenance of - and of assigned funding, in the City Mobility Plan prioritisation exercise of last year. But little in the way of actual movement, for something that surely would be sorely lacking in opposition and open up a brand new, traffic-free link across the city.

🧊 Here’s a great bit of digging from edi.bike reader John following last week’s missive on further delays to the Meadows to George Street project, in which we said “The pace is glacial - in fact, it may be slower”. John writes:
Meadows to George St route distance 1.1km (about 3,600 feet)
World's fastest glacier: 12.6km / year
Typical "moderate speed glacier" = several hundred feet a year = Hubbard Glacier (Alaska) = 600-700 ft a year = 6 years to cover the distance - see How Glaciers Move »
You could literally ride a fairly average glacier over the same distance in less time than it has taken the council to not build anything!
Excellent feedback, John. This week’s question is how many cargo bike loads of ice would we need to fabricate our own glacier, to carve out a cycle-friendly corridor here ourselves…

The bicycle, more than any other object, represents the perfect fusion of ingenuity, elegance and passion, values deeply rooted in Italian culture. The Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh is proud to present a temporary exhibition that aims to recount the history and identity of Italian cycling.
The free exhibition, which will run from 11th June – 16th July, features 12 significant bicycles, including 6 historic models from the Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum Collection. Also 6 models on loan from Italian companies that have shaped the history of cycling. Among the bicycles on display will be an early 20th-century Bianchi racing bike with a block brake and a Legnano bike ridden by Gino Bartali in the 1938 Tour de France. — more information »

🚴 One of the simplest forms of bike racing is the 'time trial', where you ride a set distance and see how long it takes.
Edinburgh Road Club run a mid-week event on the quiet A199 from Macmerry towards Haddington (~10 miles). This is open to all; you don't have to be in a cycle club, you don't need a specialist bike, just be ready to put in some effort & talk to some nice people.
12-18 year olds can take part with parental permission, there's no upper age limit.
This will be running through June (this Wednesday 10th June to 1st July) before taking a break.
Why not give it a go ? After all, two years ago Lauren Dickson began her cycle racing career on this event; today she's in the top 15 of the women's Giro D'Italia - imagine what taking part could do for you !

⛔ Closure of the Telfer Subway, from the City of Edinburgh Council:
I am writing to inform you of an upcoming temporary closure of the Telfer Subway, which will take effect from Monday 15 June 2026 for a duration of five days.
We had hoped to maintain pedestrian and cyclist access throughout the works. However, this is no longer possible due to safety and space constraints while we construct the new raised table and footway close to the subway entrance at Caledonian Crescent.
A fully signed diversion route will be active for the duration of the closure.

☀️ From Sunny Cycles in Glasgow: “We had a great afternoon at the opening of the new Cowcaddens Avenues cycle lane.
“A lovely community event with people enjoying the space, it really didn't feel like we were right beside the road. We took this opportunity to show people our adapted trikes and our cargo bikes. One of our participants hadn't been on a bike in over 20 years, and although she just came to sit on a bike, she actually managed to pedal it. Families were able to try out some cargo bikes and we were able to tell people about the rides we do to help people navigate the city and all the cycle lanes.” — more on Facebook »

In a recent UK-based trial (the ELEVATE project), researchers lent e-cargo bikes to 49 suburban households to track their daily travel habits. 📦 Edinburgh charity Goodies are offering free Cargo Bike training for those looking to volunteer with them in their food redistribution work:
Our head rider Fabian will be doing cargo bike training every Wednesday starting 17:30 at the Meadows, next to the East Meadows play park.

Looking forward to seeing you there ✨
Remember your helmets also! 🚲
🙏 Call from Edinburgh RC for bike donations via Facebook:
Bikes (especially road) and other kit needed for Portobello High School girls cycling programme.
We’re looking for donations of road cycling kit and affordable bikes suitable for girls aged 11–16 as we continue to grow our exciting new girls’ cycling programme at Portobello High School.
The programme brings together a diverse group of girls from S1–S4, many of whom are completely new to cycling. The girls have already participated in a road session at Fife Cycle Park and are heading to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome this week. Their enthusiasm has been amazing, and Linda McLean has been fantastic with them.
Our aim is not only to create opportunities for girls to get involved in cycling but also to develop a blueprint that helps schools work more closely with local cycling clubs and embed cycling within the curriculum.
Sustainability is central to our approach. Working with The Bike Station, we are refurbishing and building bikes and investing in a few hours a week of a bike mechanic rather than simply buying new equipment.
We’re looking for:
- Road bikes (11–16 year olds)
- Helmets, shoes and cycling clothing
- Affordable second-hand equipment
- Sponsors for bikes or riders - if you’d like to donate, sponsor a rider, get involved, or simply find out more please contact Greg McDowall - Headteacher - Greg.mcdowall@portobello.edin.sch.uk
Every donation will help to remove barriers and create opportunities for young people to access our sport. Thanks very much.

🚲 The Bike Station - looking for volunteer support 🚲
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new volunteers to support our mission!
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
Current opportunities seeking support are 3-4 hour shifts on Saturday afternoon in Gorgie, as well as Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning in Tollcross.
🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are exploring the option of expanding the reach of our FYOB sessions, where people pay £6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, seeing whether with more energy in the team if expansion is suitable. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants.
If any of these roles are of interest, please contact [jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk](mailto:jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk) to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
🅿️ From Gear Up Scotland - cycle racking for sale:
We are a small social enterprise based in Lanark and will shortly vacate our current premises. We have two two tier cycle racks with Sheffield lowers for sale. Open to any reasonable offers - can transport to Edinburgh. Installation would need to be managed by the recipient. Happy to sell the racks separately.

💜 Join our 'Supporters Club'
The weekly edi.bike digest will always be free (gratis) to read for anyone who subscribes, as well as remaining ad-free.
For £1/month, you can join our Supporters Club, and help with existing costs for our domain name, hosting, and promotional materials like posters and stickers.
Huge thanks to those of you who have already signed up to support us - we really appreciate it 💜
🎁 Club Perks
As well as supporting us, we're also planning the following perks for Supporters Club patrons:
- A quarterly behind-the-scenes update sharing subscriber numbers / growth, promotional efforts, and other stuff about the running of edi.bike;
- A shiny 'Supporters Club' sticker;
- Over time, we might also consult Club patrons on strategic decisions and other matters.
If you can't support us in this way, that's grand too - thanks for reading!
