📰 News this Week
✊ Over a thousand people join to Pedal on Parliament

Still recovering from this - a massive day, great turnout, amazing and powerful speeches, and even decent weather? It might be the reason my brain is struggling to write properly this week, but it’s also the reason I’m wandering around with a big smile on my face.
Great coverage in The Edinburgh Reporter including a big photo gallery at the end of the article — and also well worth leafing through this fantastic bumper album from local photographer (and serial documenter of cycle actions) Andy Catlin.

We ran into Edinburgh Critical Mass on their afterparty loop on our way home!
⚡ City of Edinburgh Council & Voi Hire Ebike Stakeholder Workshop

edi.bike was proud to participate in the Council’s workshop on hire scheme ‘teething issues’ this past week, alongside Spokes, Living Streets Edinburgh, the Edinburgh Access Panel, Councillors, Council officers and members of the Voi team. There is a real spirit of collaboration and dialogue on the few issues that remain during the pilot, and the workshop was certainly a productive milestone as the scheme settles in with residents and businesses.
Transport and Environment Convener, Councillor Stephen Jenkinson said:
“I was really pleased to see so many colleagues and stakeholders at the workshop last week. The cycle hire scheme, delivered by Voi, has been a rip-roaring success since its launch and this progress shows no signs of slowing down.
“We’ll continue to work closely with Voi and our stakeholders to ensure that the scheme continues to run smoothly.”
🌳 Further delays on ‘Meadows to George Street’ with new TRO required, extending Public Hearing

News from the project team on Meadows to George Street this week - a major north-south corridor plan to pedestrianise Forrest Rd and introduce a protected, two-way cycleway down George IV Bridge, North Bank St and the Mound to connect the many paths to and through the Meadows with (the unfinished middle bit of) CCWEL:
The current Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), which [on account of objections received] was due to be heard at a public hearing in June, is no longer being taken forward and a new revised order is being drafted. This is, in part, due to an error in the date to apply for an extension to the TRO, but also in relation to the need to start a new Re-determination Order (RSO) following moderate but essential design changes, which were included to respond to points raised during consultation and since the RSO was advertised. These are to:
address new heritage considerations on the Mound
accommodate a new tour bus stop on George IV Bridge
provide space for access controls on Forrest Road.
A decision has therefore been taken to consider and report on both orders at the same time.
Starting a new TRO also means we are now able to include some moderate design modifications which address some of the concerns raised during the TRO consultation, which if incorporated at this point, may potentially benefit the final delivery stages of the project. These relate to:
extending loading times on Bank Street
increasing the amount of disabled parking
access for residents of the streets within the project
access from Chambers Street to George IV Bridge
increasing the number of controlled zone 4 parking [spaces] at Mound Place.
On the one hand, this project was conceived of and won funding around eight years ago; and by the time it is delivered, will have been ‘on the cards’ for around a decade while hundreds of people have had to continue to emerge from the relative calm and safety of Middle Meadow Walk into a pretty dreadful gauntlet of loading vehicles, overspilling footways and perma-scaffolding lane closure to reach the city centre on current commutes. The pace is glacial - in fact, it may be slower.
But to take a kinder view on this latest development, taking the opportunity to address key concerns with the project while paperwork is reissued will only stand it in better stead when the public hearing does eventually come around; and the fact that both the TRO and RSO objections are being dealt with at said hearing will give an impartial and highly visible approval to this scheme going ahead at last, when it does get its day in ‘court’.
🏰 Local Bits

Sunday 31st saw Porty Community Energy’s ‘Weird Wheels Extravaganza‘ celebrate the addition of new cycles to their bike library with a ride through Portobello and activities on the prom. New arrivals to the fleet include the first rentable handcycle in the city - tested out by ten users on Sunday alone, as a transformative option for wheelchair-based cycling.
Jane Herbstritt, bike library coordinator said:
“Summer is the time for people to explore the fun that can be had on bikes no matter what your age or mobility needs.
“We want to offer people the chance to get out of their cars. Cycling is better for the environment, better for health and is just more enjoyable most of the time.
“We are very excited to give local people the opportunity for some great adventures with our new handcycle and fleet of cargo bikes.”
Wheelchair user Rosie Sinclair, the group’s Equal Footing coordinator, has been instrumental in bringing the handcycle to the bike library and hopes it will enable people with different mobility needs to take part in active travel:
“As a wheelchair-user myself, the discovery of hand cycles to enable me to get about as a cyclist has been life changing. I wanted other people with mobility needs to have a similar opportunity. So many people stop me in the street to ask me about my hand cycle – other wheelchair users simply don’t know of the options out there for them. Plus it’s hard to try before you buy, and they are so expensive. Hiring out the hand cycle from this library will allow them to better explore the options available to them for active travel.’
Lots of great photos of the event in this Facebook Album by John Davey and from Porty Community Energy on Facebook.

📦 Edinburgh charity Goodies are offering free Cargo Bike training for those looking to volunteer with them in their food redistribution work:
Our head rider Fabian will be doing cargo bike training every Wednesday starting 17:30 at the Meadows, next to the East Meadows play park.
This is for anyone who would like to volunteer as a food rider in the evenings during the week.
We will also be signing T&C's that will be required before you can ride.
Looking forward to seeing you there ✨
Remember your helmets also! 🚲

📝 The good folks at Spokes have spotted new planning application 24/05843/FUL for a “Cycle path link connection and associated works from Gogar Station Road south to land east of 1 Gogar Station Road” - though they also note in their Bluesky post the width of the path being around a meter less than design guidance would instruct…

🙏 Call from Edinburgh RC for bike donations via Facebook:
Bikes (especially road) and other kit needed for Portobello High School girls cycling programme.
We’re looking for donations of road cycling kit and affordable bikes suitable for girls aged 11–16 as we continue to grow our exciting new girls’ cycling programme at Portobello High School.
The programme brings together a diverse group of girls from S1–S4, many of whom are completely new to cycling. The girls have already participated in a road session at Fife Cycle Park and are heading to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome this week. Their enthusiasm has been amazing, and Linda McLean has been fantastic with them.
Our aim is not only to create opportunities for girls to get involved in cycling but also to develop a blueprint that helps schools work more closely with local cycling clubs and embed cycling within the curriculum.
Sustainability is central to our approach. Working with The Bike Station, we are refurbishing and building bikes and investing in a few hours a week of a bike mechanic rather than simply buying new equipment.
We’re looking for:
Road bikes (11–16 year olds)
Helmets, shoes and cycling clothing
Affordable second-hand equipment
Sponsors for bikes or riders - if you’d like to donate, sponsor a rider, get involved, or simply find out more please contact Greg McDowall - Headteacher - Greg.mcdowall@portobello.edin.sch.uk
Every donation will help to remove barriers and create opportunities for young people to access our sport. Thanks very much.
🧭 BEYOND EDINBURGH
🚶 A NEW walking and wheeling path connecting Newton and Duntarvie with existing paths in West Lothian has officially opened, one of a number of projects funded by Walking Scotland’s Ian Findlay Path Fund (IFPF).
In response to years of road safety concerns, the new route replaces a dangerous stretch of the B8020 with a safe, accessible off-road connection to the wider Winchburgh path network. — The Edinburgh Reporter /via City Cycling Edinburgh »
You can watch a video documenting the route by Lost in Livi on Youtube.

🎤 From International festival Cargo Bike Fest on Instagram:
Jemma lives with her family in a village about 14 miles (22km) from Stirling, Scotland. In ‘Beyond the City’ Jemma tells the story of how her family embraced the cargo bike and proved that sustainable transport isn't just for cities.
"Why couldn’t I use a cargo bike on my regular journeys, just because I lived rurally?"
“I think it’s marvellous that cargo bikes are being held up as a solution for urban transport, but cargo bikes can also be a great option for countryside living”
“Our e-cargo bike is the best thing I’ve ever spent money on, no contest"
Jemma’s story ‘Beyond the City’ is published in printed Carrier Magazine Issue 02 available here, but Cargo Bike Fest have also made it available to read online (note: interactive flip-reader).

📊 Children cycling to school in Scotland reaches highest level for 17 years - but so does those being driven — Alastair Dalton for The Scotsman »
🖼️ From Cycling Scotland on Facebook:
Great to join others in Arbroath yesterday to celebrate the opening of the 'Arbroath A Place for Everyone' project - delivered by Angus Council and Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Scotland, and funded by Transport Scotland.
This brand new 1.5km route on the path of the A92, as it runs through Arbroath, has seen the streetscape transformed: new public realm and greenery, wider walking/wheeling paths, crossings and a new protected cycle lane, connecting the centre of the town to the harbour and existing coastal cycling routes.
Evidence continues to show the impact of safe, protected cycling infrastructure like this where it's being provided in locations across Scotland. It'll be exciting to see the impact of the route in enabling more people to travel by bike in and around Arbroath for years to come.

📪 Road closure info — many thanks to regular contributor Robbie for collating and preparing these:
🏗️ Eyre Place: Road closed including contraflow cycle lane at Rodney St from today Monday 1st June until end June. It should still be possible to access Dundas St from George V Park, however be aware of a nearby road closure on Hamilton Pl if you’re travelling between Stockbridge and Broughton.

🚧 Leith Walk: Segregated cycle lanes outside the Playhouse closed due to nearby Scottish Water works on the footway for which a dismount is signed. Works are expected be complete tomorrow, Tuesday 2nd June.
🏵️ Cowgate: closed from 6:15pm – 7:30pm this Friday 5th June for a memorial event. If you’re travelling home late, be aware it may not be possible to cycle through.

🏗️ St Andrews Square: North side closed for crane removal works this weekend, 6th – 7th June, which may obstruct the CCWEL segregated cycle path.
🏃♂️ Race for Life: Holyrood Park roads closed morning of Sunday 7th June - details available here. Queens drive and High Road loop closed until 1pm.
🚧 Queensferry Road: Advisory cycle lane westbound closed at Orchard Park for council drainage surveys for up to 5 days. Update 1st June: Works delayed until atleast 22nd June.
🚧 Russell Road: Segregated cycleway leading to Roseburn to Union Canal path closed by SGN to investigate a gas leak. At time of writing, the footway remains open requiring dismounting or re-joining the carriageway.
Long Term Closures:
🏖️ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane. Update 1st June: Works expected to recommence later this month ahead of a summer re-opening. Be aware of resurfacing machinery in the road and consider using the footway.
🛒 Cramond Road South: Section of NCR 1 by Tesco and roundabout by Davidsons Main Park obstructed by resurfacing and footway widening. If you’re travelling to Davidson’s Mains Park, it may be better to stay on NCR1 to avoid a dismount. Update 1st June: works delayed and roundabout now expected to reopen 20th June.
🚲 Summerhall: Segregated Cycle Lanes by Melville Dr and Melville Ter obstructed by Summerhall improvement works. Update 1st June: works delayed and now expected to finish in July.
🎾 Gyle Park: Path between Glenmuir Rd and Glasgow Rd closed until the end of October 2026 for construction work. If you’re heading to Tesco, the path by David Lloyd gym may offer an alternate route.
🚧 Telfer Subway: Closure of Orwell Terrace for Dalry footway improvement until 2nd June 2026, requiring a dismount to access Telfer Subway.
🏗️ Dundee St: Segregated cycle lane remains closed westbound at bridge over West Approach Rd due to overrunning building demolition work.
🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge is closed to cars, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.
🌉 South Gyle Road: Bridge between modal filter and Quiet Route 9 closed for repairs. It is required to dismount and use a temporary bridge. Works are being followed by resurfacing and new raised tables, estimated completion end June 2026.
🏗️ St Marks Path: Section of Quietroute 20 between McDonald Road and Warriston Path impacted by CEC Powderhall redevelopment works. The path is expected to remain open during the majority of the construction programme. Until a temporary path is provided, exercise caution at manned crossing gates when passing through the site.
🚦 Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.
🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.
🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

🚲 The Bike Station - looking for volunteer support 🚲
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new volunteers to support our mission!
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
Current opportunities seeking support are 3-4 hour shifts on Saturday afternoon in Gorgie, as well as Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning in Tollcross.
🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are exploring the option of expanding the reach of our FYOB sessions, where people pay £6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, seeing whether with more energy in the team if expansion is suitable. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants.
If any of these roles are of interest, please contact [jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk](mailto: jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk) to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
🅿️ From Gear Up Scotland - cycle racking for sale:
We are a small social enterprise based in Lanark and will shortly vacate our current premises. We have two two tier cycle racks with Sheffield lowers for sale. Open to any reasonable offers - can transport to Edinburgh. Installation would need to be managed by the recipient. Happy to sell the racks separately.
