📰 News this Week

🔥 June Transport & Environment Committee - Round-up (and rant)

What occupies the City Chambers, has twenty-two thumbs and used twelve of them to vote against the interests of vulnerable road users this week? That’s right, the Transport Committee has gone full dafty on modal filters this cycle, and we’ve redrafted our round-up of their meeting so many times this weekend that it’s only got a single swear left in it. Sake.

🗳️ Transport Committee Round-up & Rant »

🚋 North-south tramline coverage

A few bits on the North-south tramline this week, some of which we missed last time round (and also skipped in our TEC coverage having run out of steam - doing well!)

  • ⚙️ Spokes spotted that the report on the tram consultation actually included some opinions and feedback from the Council itself, which they cover in detail here »

  • 📝 Ahead of the Transport Committee meeting on Thursday, Spokes also submitted a written deputation on the matter raising real concerns about plans for the Bridges Corridor;

  • 🚋 Regardless of your position on the alignment for the northern end of the route, Transform Scotland make the case for the need for expanding the tram ‘network’ we currently have;

  • 🚊 Cllr Stephen Jenkinson, City of Edinburgh Council Transport Convener, weighs in over the weekend with a piece in the Scotsman - “Fast-growing Edinburgh stands at a crossroads and its trams are key”.

🏰 Local Bits

🚂 The Powderhall Link campaign is the focus of this week’s Edinburgh Critical Mass family-friendly mass protest / group ride, leaving at 2pm from Middle Meadow Walk this Saturday 27th; the ride will make a stop for brief talk about the project in St Mark’s Park, before skirting the route of the now-inactive railway line destined for active travel reclamation. Critical Mass shared a map of the expected route to Bluesky and elsewhere.

👏 Great news from Simon Christie on Bluesky:

The Royal Mile is OPEN for cyclists! Barriers moved to sides and the all Important traffic cone design is doing a sterling job. Hopefully it now stays accessible. Thank you @cllrcmiller.bsky.social — Simon on Bluesky

As other commenters point out - hopefully these cones become retractable bollards before long. This setup is still ripe for a vehicular territory grab.

⛏️ The infamous Picardy Place Lamppost has apparently been joined by the Bankhead Boxes in the ‘former quirks’ section of the city’s patchy cycle lane history: a report on City Cycling Edinburgh that after thirteen years of there being utility junction boxes smack in the middle of the Bankhead cycleway, they’ve at last been moved. Timely.

🚣 Great photos from Laid Back Bikes, also featuring the BANZAI crew, from the Edinburgh Canal Festival over this weekend shared on Bluesky;

🏖️ There’s a free led ride from A Wee Pedal at Bridgend Farmhouse this Saturday 27th, from 11am - more details and tickets on Eventbrite »

🚒 Users of the r/Edinburgh subreddit shared photos following a fire on Dalry road in what has described by Redditors as a new ‘sketchy looking ebike shop’, with one poster sharing an image of a pile of bikes on the street that had been pulled from the shop while Firefighters dealt with the incident;

🌉 Longstone Community Council shared on Bluesky that “a 'Notice of Initiation' has been lodged for the commencement of development works on the former Booker site at 22 Inglis Green Rd, next to Sainsbury’s. Mixed-use residential and commercial development. Expected to commence from 22/06/26” - which is today, and the development entails Section 75 financial contributions levied on the developer to pay towards the installation of a new ‘Longstone Link’ bridge over the Water of Leith connecting Inglis Green Rd to the Water of Leith walkway and onwards toNew Mart Rd at Chesser - see more in the last briefing note on the project »

💸 It’s Greenlight funding time again over at Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (‘ECCAN’):

Greenlight is ECCAN’s community climate fund, supporting local projects that help communities across Edinburgh respond to the climate and nature crisis.

This year, 22 projects have applied for grants of £5,001–£20,000.

Funding for projects over £5k is decided by a vote from members - so you need to join to vote, but joining is free and they’re a great organisation to get involved with!

In terms of cycling projects:

🔧 Bikes for Refugees are looking to fund a “partnership project between ECCAN members Bikes for Refugees Edinburgh, Lothian Community Transport Services (LCTS), and Edinburgh Climate Café (ECC) will support 100 refugees and asylum seekers via the provision of free refurbished bicycles and New Scots Welcome Packs. Welcome Packs contain essential cycling accessories (lock, helmet, lights) alongside cycling, and climate information and resources supported by ECC. We will organise group day outings to rural places of interest across Lothian in conjunction with LCTS to introduce refugees/asylum seekers to Scotland’s green spaces and cycling corridors” - and of course with the refurbished bicycles provided by Bikes for Refugees.

⚡ Porty Community Energy have plans for outreach and a pilot scheme in Bingham - “We are collaborating with Community Renewal Trust to widen access to cycling and climate action in one of Edinburgh’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Greenlight funding will help us bring inclusive active travel opportunities into Bingham. We will start a food waste reduction project linked to cargo-bike use, engaging more residents in poverty into climate action. A team of staff and volunteers will run a pilot bike library in the area, lead family rides from Bingham and Portobello, teach one-to-one cycle lessons for beginner and returning riders, and supported rides for people hiring our wheelchair handcycle.”

➡️ Online voting is open until 10th July.

🌱 Great coverage over at The List, interviewing Callum Ross on The Cycling Gardeners Of Edinburgh:

'I thought this could be done differently and better' - Getting around Edinburgh on two or three wheels is a constant challenge and an occasional danger. Danny Munro talks to Callum Ross of The Cycling Gardeners about his path to pursuing an eco-friendly and socially responsible business model — The List »

📪 Road closure info — many thanks to regular contributor Robbie for collating and preparing these:

✅ Eyre Place: Works at Rodney St now complete and road, including cycle contraflow, back open.

✅ Cramond Road South: Long delayed works by on NCR 1 by Tesco and roundabout by Davidsons Main Park now open again, but with temporary traffic lights. If you’re travelling to Davidson’s Mains Park, it may still be better to stay on NCR1.

🚧 Queensferry Road: Advisory cycle lane westbound closed at Orchard Park for council drainage surveys from today, Monday 22nd June for up to 5 days.

🎬 Moray Place: Road and modal filter at Ainslie Pl closed this Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th June for Filming. It may be necessary to dismount and wait up to 5 minutes to walk through between shoots.

🚧 St Marks Path: Toucan Crossing on Broughton Road obstructed for Scottish Water valve repairs from Tuesday 23rd June for an estimated 3 days. It may be necessary to dismount and use a temporary crossing.

🎬 Leith Links: Links Gardens and paths outside St Marks Primary closed this Thursday 25th June, with breaks for access 8am-9:30am and 4pm-6:30pm. Outside these times, it may be necessary to dismount and wait up to 5 minutes to walk through between shoots.

👮 Royal Mile: Intermittent closures on morning of this Friday 26th June for rehearsals for the Opening of the Scottish Parliament. Expected to be finished by 9am.

👑 Holyrood Week: Intermittent closures of Horse Wynd outside parliament from this weekend. All Holyrood Park roads including Queens Drive closed next Tuesday 30th June 1pm - 7pm for the Garden Party event. The offroad shared use path is expected to remain open.

🎉 Old Town: Multiple events this Saturday 27th June obstructing George IV Bridge, Middle Meadow Walk, Royal Mile, Abbeyhill and Grassmarket. NCR1 should be open in the afternoon.

🚲 Summerhall: Toucan crossing between Meadows path and Buccleuch St on NCR1 obstructed by barriers due to drivers running red light to pass roadworks. Segregated Cycle Lanes by Melville Dr and Melville Ter obstructed for Summerhall improvement works until July.

Long Term Closures:

🏖️ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane until mid-August. Be aware of resurfacing machinery in the road and consider using the footway.

🌉 Water of Leith Path: Kinauld Tan Works Footbridge by Currie closed due to a hole in the bridge deck. A diversion is suggested via Lanark Rd, which may be unsuitable.

🎾 Gyle Park: Path between Glenmuir Rd and Glasgow Rd closed until the end of October 2026 for construction work. If you’re heading to Tesco, the path by David Lloyd gym may offer an alternate route.

🏗️ Dundee St: Segregated cycle lane remains closed westbound at bridge over West Approach Rd due to overrunning building demolition work.

🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge is closed to cars, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.

🏗️ St Marks Path: Section of Quietroute 20 between McDonald Road and Warriston Path impacted by CEC Powderhall redevelopment works. The path is expected to remain open during the majority of the construction programme. Until a temporary path is provided, exercise caution at manned crossing gates when passing through the site.

🚦 Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until late Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.

🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.

🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.

🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.

⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

🎉 Events and Happenings

📆 Upcoming / Ongoing

🚴 One of the simplest forms of bike racing is the 'time trial', where you ride a set distance and see how long it takes.

Edinburgh Road Club run a mid-week event on the quiet A199 from Macmerry towards Haddington (~10 miles). This is open to all; you don't have to be in a cycle club, you don't need a specialist bike, just be ready to put in some effort & talk to some nice people.

12-18 year olds can take part with parental permission, there's no upper age limit.

This will be running each Wednesday in June until 1st July, before taking a break.

Why not give it a go ? After all, two years ago Lauren Dickson began her cycle racing career on this event; today she's in the top 15 of the women's Giro D'Italia - imagine what taking part could do for you !

Enter here - and if you want to know a bit more about time trialling this handy guide may help.

The bicycle, more than any other object, represents the perfect fusion of ingenuity, elegance and passion, values deeply rooted in Italian culture. The Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh is proud to present a temporary exhibition that aims to recount the history and identity of Italian cycling.

The free exhibition, which will run from 11th June – 16th July, features 12 significant bicycles, including 6 historic models from the Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum Collection. Also 6 models on loan from Italian companies that have shaped the history of cycling. Among the bicycles on display will be an early 20th-century Bianchi racing bike with a block brake and a Legnano bike ridden by Gino Bartali in the 1938 Tour de France. — more information »

🫂 Help Needed

📦 Edinburgh charity Goodies are offering free Cargo Bike training for those looking to volunteer with them in their food redistribution work:

Our head rider Fabian will be doing cargo bike training every Wednesday starting 17:30 at the Meadows, next to the East Meadows play park.

This is for anyone who would like to volunteer as a food rider in the evenings during the week.

We will also be signing T&C's that will be required before you can ride.
Looking forward to seeing you there ✨
Remember your helmets also! 🚲

❤️ Charlotte’s Tandems are looking for help in Edinburgh:

We lend, throughout the UK, at no cost (i.e. for free), tandems and tag-alongs (trailer bikes) to (and only to) people with disabilities or additional needs, who are unable to ride a bike safely on their own, so that they can enjoy the wonders of cycling.

In other words we provide all-ability, adapted, inclusive cycling for adults and children who are disabled, have special needs, SEN, SEND or impairments, such as Autism, Down's Syndrome, visual impairments, learning or physical difficulties.

They’ve published a Facebook post in which they are seeking a new ‘helper’ in Edinburgh - you can read about this role here, and a commenter shared:

As a former helper in Edinburgh, there are a couple of things you need to know if you are interested in taking this on.

  1. You need to be able store several tandems when they are not being used.

  2. The riding skills of who want to borrow a tandem are highly variable, so you may need to try to teach them how to ride a tandem, which is not like riding a solo bike.

If you can help, do get in touch with them.

🙏 Call from Edinburgh RC for bike donations via Facebook:

Bikes (especially road) and other kit needed for Portobello High School girls cycling programme.

We’re looking for donations of road cycling kit and affordable bikes suitable for girls aged 11–16 as we continue to grow our exciting new girls’ cycling programme at Portobello High School.

The programme brings together a diverse group of girls from S1–S4, many of whom are completely new to cycling. The girls have already participated in a road session at Fife Cycle Park and are heading to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome this week. Their enthusiasm has been amazing, and Linda McLean has been fantastic with them.

Our aim is not only to create opportunities for girls to get involved in cycling but also to develop a blueprint that helps schools work more closely with local cycling clubs and embed cycling within the curriculum.

Sustainability is central to our approach. Working with The Bike Station, we are refurbishing and building bikes and investing in a few hours a week of a bike mechanic rather than simply buying new equipment.

We’re looking for:

  • Road bikes (11–16 year olds)

  • Helmets, shoes and cycling clothing

  • Affordable second-hand equipment

  • Sponsors for bikes or riders - if you’d like to donate, sponsor a rider, get involved, or simply find out more please contact Greg McDowall - Headteacher - Greg.mcdowall@portobello.edin.sch.uk

Every donation will help to remove barriers and create opportunities for young people to access our sport. Thanks very much.

👏 Cycling Without Age Musselburgh [FB] are raising funds to modernise their trishaw fleet - they have a JustGiving page, but more effective direct giving is also possible using the bank details on their Facebook post;

🚲 The Bike Station - looking for volunteer support 🚲

With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new volunteers to support our mission!

🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).

Current opportunities seeking support are 3-4 hour shifts on Saturday afternoon in Gorgie, as well as Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning in Tollcross.

🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are exploring the option of expanding the reach of our FYOB sessions, where people pay £6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, seeing whether with more energy in the team if expansion is suitable. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants.

If any of these roles are of interest, please contact jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk to discuss the role in more detail.

As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.

Ongoing: 👥 Get help with routes & road confidence through Cycle Buddies or become a buddy | 🚌 Marshal for School Bike Buses | 🙋 Help with school programme ‘I Bike’ | 🗨️Join Spokes’ Planning or Resources group | 🆘 Donate money or bikes to Bikes for Refugees | 📦⚡️ Hire Community Cargobikes, E-bikes or Trailers from SW20, Porty Community Energy or Banzai | ♻️ Donate old bikes to The Bike Station, The Wee Spoke Hub or ‘Brake the Cycle’.
