Start where you are
A quick note before we begin:
I first shared Start where you are back in February, before Weekly Resilience Tips had really gotten underway. Many of you weren’t here yet, and I’ve made a few small updates since then.
I’ve also heard from several people who found this one especially useful. So it seemed worth sharing again.
When things feel overwhelming, it’s easy to believe you should already be somewhere else: more grounded, more confident, more on top of things.
But resilience doesn’t always begin with fixing, figuring things out, or rushing into action. Sometimes it begins much more simply: by noticing where you actually are, right here, right now, without needing things to be any different, at least for this moment.
That combination of awareness and acceptance matters. It gives you steadier footing for deciding what comes next. You don't have to have everything figured out before you can begin. You can start from here.
Try this
Pause for a moment and notice what’s here right now: what you’re feeling, thinking, or carrying. Then quietly say to yourself:
“This is where I’m at right now. I can start from here.”
Not to lower the bar or give up, but to stop struggling against what's already happening. Then, when you're ready, ask yourself: What would help me take the next small step?
If you're supporting someone else
The same principle applies. People often feel more supported when they feel understood before someone starts offering advice or solutions.
You might simply say:
“I can see this is hard. Would it help to think about a next step, or would it be more helpful for me just to listen right now?”
Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do for someone is simply meet them where they are, without rushing them toward what comes next.
Take care.
