Extended Update Sept 2026

2026-09-22

As promised, you don’t have to be on Instagram to know what I’ve been up to. Here are a couple of updates in case you missed them!

First: a video of me singing Surabaya Johnny (and showing off my German, poor pronunciation notwithstanding), at the La Jolla Community Center with Phil Dannels on the piano. __________________________________________________________

Next: VAMP (opera is dead)

VAMP in my backyard, April 2026, with Ben Read on Piano

I, for one, think it IS true: opera is dead. This is why I love it.

My spooky show VAMP (opera is dead) comes to Los Angeles at the Pacific Opera Project HQ on Sun., Oct. 4 @ 3pm.

featuring my good friend Randall Bills — whom I’ve known since before we both joined the ranks of the undead several centuries hence — and Yumi Hashimoto on piano.

I debuted VAMP in my backyard in April because I wanted to:
A) talk about Twilight
B) sing Olivia Rodrigo and Rosalía
C) lecture people on feminist implications of the portrayal of the vamp archetype in film, literature and OPERA
D) sing Evanescence

Then: 11-month-old life update:

First of all, I live in San Diego again, my sacred non-ancestral home.

1 - me and Josh (not pictured) lived in Berlin for 2 years, Germany for 3, looked cool doing it, speak fluent German now
2 - Lest you think I am cool, looked like this touring Deutschland with The Cast (got in trouble with serious opera coaches for doing this, made money, learned to be ENTERTAINING from incomparable colleagues)
3 - Sang Handel’s opera Semele (Juno—Iris got the hence away) at the Berliner Phil with the amazingly talented Sarah Hayashi and barockorchester capella vitalis Berlin
4 - Looked mean as Carmen with UckerOper in the middle of nowhere Germany, but also Poland
5 - Visited Lucca, Italy (birthplace of frenemy Puccini) to help my mom look for a vacay apartment

Not pictured: crying at the Ausländerbehörde, being yelled at by Germans on trains for speaking too loudly, gray gray gray winters/falls/springs, chronic underemployment alternated with bursts of numbing over-employment (this is not particular to Germany)

Moved back to San Diego because:

A) Wanted to

B) Friends

C) ☀️
