Haciendo espacio

Ingredientes
Papas golden o blancas - 6 medianas
Col Napa - La mitad de la cabeza
Apio - 4 baras
Ajo chalote (Shallot) - 1
Caldo de pollo - 6 tazas
Mantequilla - 6 cucharadas
Harina - 4 cucharadas
Tomillo Fresco - 1 cucharada
Romero Fresco - 1/2 cucharada
Perejil Fresco - 2 cucharadas
Crema doble (heavy cream) - 1/4 cup
Sal
Pimienta
Instrucciones

Tell me about your project TRECE OJOS. How did it come about? What aspect of your artistic practice are you fulfilling?
TRECE OJOS is a publishing house and risograph printing studio that officially emerged three years ago to realize my publishing aspirations, combining my previous experience at Residente magazine with a more personal approach. That's the creative side, but it's also a way to generate income by offering specific editing and printing services. Something more accessible compared to the production and sale of conventional art.
TRECE OJOS (my imaginary friend from childhood) is also my alter ego, a complement to my professional practice, ideal for themes that "don't fit" in a drawing or painting, an opportunity for collaboration that helps messages to have a life beyond the digital realm, where communication and physical contact are promoted. Thematically, I like to anchor myself in the themes of the Latin American queer experience, with an emphasis on self-publishing and the inner world made tangible.
Offering water is one of the most primitive gestures of consideration, attention, and care among living beings. Especially in times of social crisis, political or environmental, a glass of water can extend ties, rest the body, and heal the spirit.”
Tell me what you love about print media
Unlike TV, printed materials were, in my childhood, the most intimate and personal way to discover the world, because of the time one spent with them. Any comics, magazines, encyclopedias that happened to fall into my hands became part of my personality, fueling my curiosity and visual language. In these times of volatility and information overload, it makes more sense than ever to return to printed media, in any of its formats, to communicate directly with each other and exchange ideas. I seek to prioritize quality over quantity, the lasting over the ephemeral.

How does the business work?
On one hand, printing and publishing commissions, where my involvement and fees depend on the project. On the other hand, there are TRECE OJOS projects, which I promote and sell through social media, book and graphic art fairs locally and nationally. These fairs vary in scale and can be organized by individuals, collectives, museums, etc. Honestly, their commercial success is always a gamble and depends on many factors, you know, their ability to draw a crowd, location, public interest…
Tell me about your visual art practice
It's definitely a journey of self-discovery through drawing and painting. Defining what I want and how I want to represent has been a process of over 20 years, and at this point, I'm trying to "cleanse" the images of unnecessary elements, focusing only on what's essential. For my paintings, I do a lot of preliminary sketching, aiming for powerful, legible images that resonate with the viewer. Formally, I use geometry to ensure that every line, every shape, and every element is exactly where it should be. Thematically, I want to interpret the world through the spaces and bodies that surround me, paying attention to what unites the personal and the universal.

How did you develop the voice you’re using right now?
For many years, I used poetic metaphors to create symbols and artistic languages that reflected my personal concerns, but now I'm more interested in observing and understanding the physical world we live in. Observing immediate reality without relying on external symbolic figures. Basically, if I have to look up a reference online, I'm not going to use it. There's so much information in every element that makes up our lives: people, spaces, clothes, body language, colors, sounds. Everything we notice in the world is actually a reflection of our inner concerns. I believe that, both personally and collectively, it's more important than ever to pay attention to the real world. I think a lot about the messages and reflections that are needed in public discourse, especially in Latin America, on issues of the environment and social justice.

Talk to me about collectivism, the importance of community, and the roles we take?
Individualism is a disease that is being heavily promoted for political and economic purposes. The psychological, social, and environmental effects are already evident, and we must urgently find ways to counteract them. For me, artistic production is a great way to connect people with their concerns, aspirations, fears, and hopes constructively. Exhibitions, fairs, and presentations that we can find in our community are ideal opportunities to step outside of ourselves and acknowledge one another.
It is useless to "connect" with people from all over the world if we do not understand and address the problems and virtues of the people around us. It is a very ambitious task, but we have to start somewhere.

What are you working on that we haven’t talked about?
I’m just focusing on extending TRECE OJOS in a way that the projects and impact can grow through fair and well-compensated collaborations.
