Slide: cross-device shopping

Slide: an experiment in cross-device shopping.

You are reading Future Visions, a newsletter by Uncommon Practice. This edition shares from our ongoing research playground for brand expression.

Hey all!

So many of us sit at a desk, or on the couch, phone in hand. While we look at our phone, the screen in front of us sits idle. What if we connected both into one shared canvas?

Slide is a new experiment applying that idea to shopping. You can browse surf boards on your phone. When you swipe one up, it slides onto the big screen. Full-sized, in 3D.

From there your phone becomes the remote. Tilt to rotate. Flip to see the back. Tap for more info.

Here’s a quick demo:

It’s a look at what shopping could feel like if our devices worked as a set. Your phone stays in your hands for browsing and control. The big screen does what only a big screen can: show the board large, in 3D, detailed, immersive. No switching between touch and mouse, no need to.

Created with creative developer extraordinaire Kevin Beck, for Fernand Surfboards.

How it works

Kevin: “Two browsers, one session. Desktop opens as the host and shows a QR with a unique id. Phone scans it, loads the same app, and opens a WebRTC data channel to that id. From then on they only exchange small JSON messages: throw, drag, orientation, flip, close.”

Head to our Instagram for more images and a little behind the scenes. We’re very excited about this. More soon!

Before we go

  • Previously we researched how to blow dandelion seeds from one screen to another.

  • Blink is another interaction experiment. It researches how to use blinking as an input.

  • Speaking of online shopping: in March we asked Xenia Dobonyi of GIVENCHY what the future of e-commerce holds. Read the interview.

Until next time,
