this occasional society update

the release details of the collaborative e.p. between myself and Samatha Dubs are all now agreed. All the info will be in the next newsletter, but safe to say we’re both really pleased and looking forward to sharing it with you.

t.o.s. played the first ever Aldershot EMOM a few days ago. It all happened quite last minute, but it was fun, learning happened and some really great folks were met. A particular highlight was the masterful set by wild marsh east, applying a beautiful sample based sound collage approach. Well worth checking out.

Next up Bournemouth EMOM on 20 August and Music in the City Southampton on 12 September. All the details are on the ‘live’ section of the website for details.

The monthly online “NHAM in Concert” this month is Bob Drake on 20 August. There is also NHAMFEST26 26 - 28 August with an array of of great acts, including control.org doing a 30 year retrospective, and other activities online from across the world.

No 3rd W3dn35day gig this month. We’re having a wee break. We’re really excited about the acts lined up later this year and into next year though.

M-Corp has a new EP out called ‘Hop Picking’ - a companion piece to the recent Garden Invicta album. Expect nostalgic drum metronomes, whacked-out LFO madness and old English folksong. Available now on Bandcamp,  Mirlo,  Subvert, Unstream and YouTube.

Long-time friend of the society, gribbles, has a new album out on 4 September. ‘Agatewards’ is a collection of my tracks that use samples of recordings of Tennysons poems written in the Lincolnshire dialect. It's coming out on the Yellowbelly Records, which showcases Lincolnshire connected acts. There’s a NHAM Launch Party on the evening of 4 Sept, a Bandcamp Listening Party on 5 Sept and a launch gig on 6 Sept at the Joiners Arms, Lincoln.

More live action will be going down at Boxes & Wires, 28 August, a new night at The Star Pub, Dorking.

On a different scale entirely, KRabazzZ #2 at Zentralwerk Dresden is a big experimental and interdisciplinary music festival in Dresden (Germany) from 13th to 16th of August.
https://hanse3.de/KollektivRabazzz/ On Thursday they will start with a street parade, then a different collective takes over the curation each day, with Metaknoten participating on Saturday. I may need to save up for a trip in a future year.

meanwhile in Norman, Oklahoma (US), Noise Church is a recurring monthly experimental music and noise showcase hosted by Dissociation (an Oklahoma-based experimental sound and visual art collective) at the Resonator Institute arts space.

Back closer to t.o.s. basecamp, the Sine Waves on Sunday radio show with Max Williams has a ton of great features coming up in the month ahead, with highlights including a session from the always wonderful noise artist Elif Yalvaç, a show celebrating Southampton Pride (incidentally, I’ll be working on the sound system by the Stage Door / Painted Wagon during Pride - if you are there, come and say hello), a Music in the City mixtape show and trio of tracks to mark the recent passing of William Orbit (RIP).

Back in the world of releases, utilising field recordings, piano, found objects and modular sounds to create darkly ambient electroacoustic soundscapes, ‘never’ by Pete Latshaw came out recently on Bandcamp and Mirlo and sounds particularly great on headphones.

Another cracking recent release is a collaboration between two artists featured here separately in previous months, ‘Dreams & Riddles’ by Paul Griffin and Socool combines chilled electronica and that understated funky bass that weaves through a lot of Socool releases.

Returning friend Simon Heartfield has dropped another fab new album. Live 26 is a great record of his most recent sets and is P.W.Y.W. currently. Nice!

Finally, new to me this month, ‘Tinky Winky is Dead’ a recent release by Undercat, oscillates between pleasingly between electronics and a more indie vibe, with vocals and a vibe that reminds me of a more wigged out version of a bunch of bands (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Grandaddy etc) that hold a special place in my heart. Many warm fuzzies listening to this one.

aob - things that have replenished our creative wellspring recently

This month I’ve been replenished by the simple act of going for more walks in nature without headphones on.

I also had a great day out recently at an all day event celebrating 25 years of Spirit of Gravity, with a particular highlight being a set from my 3rd W3dn35day co-conspirator Meljoann that slayed the crowd and left me grinning from ear to ear.
