this occasional society - july '26 newsletter

allo my leetle chums,

this occasional society update

the collaborative e.p. between myself and Samatha Dubs under the moniker ‘Cave Cultivation’ is complete and sounding great. We’re looking at a few release options currently and hope to have a release date to announce by next month.

It looks like t.o.s. will be playing 'Music in the City’ in September again this year. Keep an eye on the ‘live’ section for details of that and hopefully other gigs as they are announced.

This month’s w.i.p. music sketch is here.

the next newsletter will be with you 8.8.

as ever, if you want anything included in the ‘updates from friends of the society’ section, just let us know.

updates from friends of the society

July’s 3rd W3dn35day artist is Samantha Jane Smith, debuting ‘In the blink of an eye’ 15 July, starting at 20.00 UK time (19.00 UTC). “In the blink of an eye” is a travelogue in space and time, visiting worlds that exist, will exist and used to exist. Meeting beings of many different types who have both good and bad intentions. Entirely new and created especially for the gig. Calendar reminder here

The next night, the monthly online “NHAM in Concert” is Liota, bringing beautiful trip-hoppy electronica. Calendar reminder here

Then on the Friday of that week is a Listening party for the album Superseed by Norwegian electronic musician and producer, ILKAMA.

As trailed last month, James Hastings new album No Beacon is now out and it’s another beaut, using his guitar to create glitches, soundscapes, beats and layers. (Our new collab album is, i promise, still in progress).

If you can get to Walthamstow and like experimental music / improvisation / noise / sound art / performance, sign up to get details of the new NOISE TABLE nights organised by Graham Dunning starting soon.

Sine Waves on Sunday radio show highlights in the month ahead include a South American Synth Pioneers week, a live session from err:Rawr, an interview with Sun Electric and highlights from Bournemouth EMOM.

Speaking of EMOM, Chewie suggested I mention the nights more widely. as people often don’t realise they exist near them. They also highlighted that the Derby (UK) one (16 July) doesn’t seem to be listed. Likewise, the new night in EMOM night in Aldershot (UK) starting 6 August isn’t listed either yet.

Another month, another Simon Heartfield release - The End of Science EP is classic raw hardware techno that Simon does so well. He’s also playing at Spirt of Gravity in Brighton (UK) on 6 August.

Speaking of Spirit of Gravity, they are celebrating 25 years on 18 July at The Green Door, Brighton (UK). All being well, I’m going to see Melljoann live for the first time. ‘citing

Speaking of ‘fedifolk’ What Will It Take is by a mysterious artist known as Sknot. No one knows who they are, although i bet Sknob could make a good educated guess.

I’ve been greatly enjoying the Dark Fidelity Hi Fi album Your Skyline Correspondent - out now on Bricolage records. Bringing aching broken beat and ambient electronica that is at once melancholy, cathartic and filled with warmth.

aob - things that have replenished our creative wellspring recently

Although I’m not a massive fan of him or his music, i’ve enjoyed Legend, The Miles Davis story, which tells his tale very lyrically and doesn’t gloss over the darker side of his personality. It’s on the BBC website here, but as it’s a podcast, I imagine it’s available in other places too.
