3.20 — A fun creative in Denver

As of today, my dearly beloved Livvy’s pregnancy is at term.

We also just had a First Friday Feast at Teocalli. And tomorrow is a PowerPoint Party.

Those familiar with Company history will be aware that, eerily, all previous Company babies* have begun their long entry into the world under these exact same conditions: pregnancy at term, First Friday feast at Teocalli, day before a PowerPoint Party. So, if history repeats itself, sometime this evening Livvy will go into labor, and sometime around PowerPoint Party tomorrow evening my heart will begin to live outside of myself.

In no way are either of us ready for this. We have a lot going on. Projects and events to wrap up and hand over. Furniture to assemble. Things to repair. So we deeply hope that we can break tradition, escape these auspicious conditions, and have just a little bit more time before this great and wonderful upheaval.

But it could happen. If not this weekend, then another soon enough. And so you should know that this very well could be the last issue of Paperwork for a while. (I cannot burden another with this mantel, though if you find it I hope you catch a double spirit.) And even if our baby does us the courtesy of tarrying, I may still chose to end this run early—to watch the narrative and decide when to cut to credits.

Whatever comes next, and whenever next comes, I need you to know that it has been one of the greatest joys of my life to get to pay attention to you and to remember you. It was maybe always a foolishly extravagant act to spend so much time documenting this strange life of ours, but I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity.

I love you and I will miss you, and I hope to see you all the way through October 23, and then again in the life to come.

—Iván

  • This is coming in late, but this is the issue in which I would have reminded you about book club, and about Weekly Wednesday Worknight. There will be another book club. There will be another Worknight.
  • PowerPoint Party No. 43 is this Saturday—tomorrow— October 3. We’ve got two slots open for anyone (who has attended a PowerPoint Party before) who wants to present. Reply if you’re interested. Or just come and hear from Wolfgang, Vanessa, Ellen, Lauren T., Alex, Trevr, Andrew, Kayla, and me.
  • Next Saturday, October 10, Sylvia and Erin are hosting This Too Shall Future: A Salon Soirée. Described as “a creative gathering to dive deeply into matters of the heart and mind”, it’ll be a time of sharing ideas and making collaborative art pieces. The event page has been updated with resources, which you can also find here.
  • Glint: Time will be on the 13th. Reply or sign up on Whiteboard if you’re interested in telling a story.

Nostalgia

Do you remember those two weeks where the Nostalgia was slim? How it kept getting much thinner after that?

The Sunday when Ryan Roy-Kent-ed the couches? How, at Ellen’s delay, Jessica S. said “The show waits for anyone who requests it!”?

The return of Norton? The trip reports? Adam’s unexpected but deeply appreciated follow up on umbilical cords?

Do you remember the First Friday Feast at Avanti with a smiling Vivian?

The Project Runway finale watch party?

The clothing swap? How Beth said she didn’t know how to wear a beret but wore it perfectly?

The Saw: The Musical outing?

Do you remember the 9th Summery? How intimate it was? How much we cried? How we entered a new season together?

Or the small Worknight that got smaller as the night went on? The question of the accent?

The recess split?

How everyone at In The Making presented?

Or the night of The Moth? How we all got to sit together with the star? How Mary Ann Tate and Nancy were also there? Our traditional debrief afterward?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • *Company babies refer to babies born to Company members during their employment at The Company (similar to production babies on film sets). Junior Associates, a term more commonly in use, refers to any children of Company members, regardless of the circumstances of their birth.
  • At the September 16 Worknight: Mary Ann readied Ridwell recycling; Lauren T selected photos for Summery; Jessica S worked on crocheting 6" of hem; Livvy finished doula tasks and officiant tasks; Will worked on writing a zine; Mark completed the branding deck and completed MBLEx quizzes, Onyx tried letting being be enough; Ava and maybe someone else finished IRS tax simulation verification; Allyson made a to do list; and someone did something with frames into AE. Writeup by Allyson
  • At the September 23 Worknight: Norton organized font editor references; Jessica S. figured out buttons and almost finished her cardigan; Madeleine and Iván added Beth tape and started on Ryan tape (no relation to Company Ryan); and Livvy reviewed officiant script and finished all Connected Canvas tasks. Writeup by Livvy
  • At Summery: Iván talked about a time before catastrophe, Lauren T. shared about dogged days, Madeleine reflected on a time of extremes, Morgan took us through an immensity of plans, Jim asked his child about what they remember, Mark spoke of heartbreak and victory, Allyson read letters to moments, and Livvy wrote to the future.
  • At In the Making: Jim shared the process behind his interactive PowerPoint Party presentations, Madeleine and Iván shared a rough cut of the final section of their Hell House story, Jessica S. talked about her cardigan project, Iván and Livvy showed some of the work and thinking that went into their Baby Show, and Norton presented an update to his font-making tool.
  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a member-supported gathering place. If you’d like to pop in for a workday and you know one of us, reach out to schedule a time and we can let you in for free. If we don’t know you yet, reach out so we can get to know you, or come by an event and say hi.

I’ve recently become curious about the comings and goings of a squirrel who traverses the lines in front of The Company. It’s possible that it’s more than one squirrel—I have not yet figured out how to differentiate between same-colored squirrels, though with closer observation I probably could—but whatever the case, it has recently dawned on me in the years of seeing said squirrel(s) that I don’t know what there is that a squirrel would find interesting elsewhere in the intersection. Here I can be seen beginning preliminary investigations at what is undoubtedly a horrible time for me to be taking on a new research project. Photo by Madeleine
In the Making.
Livvy and I really like hosting things, which is why we invented an entirely new business model where we and friends lose money to spend time and energy to host so many things. Recent and future developments in our family (the baby!) are leading us to start seeking takeovers, and here Norton can be seen beginning his run of In the Making hosting. What total aplomb.

Jim and Jessica S.’s horror at a post-credit scene we were curious about including in the show. They have helped us decide not to include it, but if you’d like to feel this same kind of shocked, feel free to ask us and we can play the clip for you. Photo by Livvy
Jessica S. began this evening as the single non-presenter, but she has been spending a year making a cardigan and we convinced her to tell us about it, making this In the Making the first one in Company history in which every attendee also was a presenter. The closest we had gotten to this was that one time that Livvy conscripted most of us to read her script.
