What happened this week
Immigration enforcement dominated this week's record. A DHS whistleblower disclosed that USCIS officers were ordered to impersonate voters on state election sites and build law-enforcement files on citizens using data the agency knew was unreliable. In Florida, ICE detained a journalist exiled from Nicaragua and, separately, a six-year-old Charlotte first-grader and her mother, deporting the family to Venezuela days after a hearing their immigration judge never showed up to. A DHS Inspector General report found guards at Miami's Krome detention center pepper-spraying non-resisting detainees and using an unauthorized chokehold amid severe overcrowding, and a Guardian investigation found the government routing the vast majority of unaccompanied migrant children into Texas shelters where legal representation can run as low as 9%.
Elsewhere, the Justice Department settled with two more hospital systems — UPMC and NYU Langone — forcing an end to gender-affirming care for minors, the fifth and sixth such deals in a standing national investigation. Attorney General Todd Blanche kept campaigning for GOP candidates, extending a pattern watchdogs say violates the Hatch Act. Trump announced he's banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House over their coverage. Local governments made their own moves against speech and access: Palm Beach County deputies arrested a rights lawyer for speaking past a curtailed comment period at a hearing on the county's Israeli-bonds investment, Southlake's city council reversed course to deny a Pride festival permit it had approved the year before, and Cobb County schools pulled Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" from library shelves without the parent-review process Georgia law requires. A federal jury convicted a CBP officer of using his badge and gun to sexually assault and rob women, a Manteca mayor and a local business owner were charged with offering discounts for votes, New Mexico's child welfare agency denied records on a dead infant under a "bona fide researcher" loophole, and the Caribbean boat-strike campaign carried out its 69th lethal strike, bringing the confirmed death toll to at least 231 — still without charge, trial, or congressional authorization.
