ICE agents pepper-sprayed 10 protesters outside Broadview, Illinois ICE facility, hospitalizing two

Event: September 20, 2026 Location: Broadview, Illinois Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Excessive force by law enforcement, Obstruction of a First Amendment-protected activity

On September 20, 2026, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pepper-sprayed at least 10 protesters outside the Broadview, Illinois ICE processing facility after demonstrators blocked the facility's driveway, according to village officials. Two of the protesters were hospitalized at Loyola Hospital while Broadview Fire EMS treated the rest at the scene. The Department of Homeland Security said officers "relied on their training to gain control of the situation," while protest organizers alleged an ICE vehicle struck a protester and that agents forcibly removed a seated demonstrator who posed no threat.

ICE agents injured U.S. citizen during mistaken-identity detention in Evanston, Illinois

Event: September 20, 2026 Location: Evanston, Illinois Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Violence in immigration enforcement, Unlawful detention

On September 20, 2026, federal agents believed to be from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement mistook a U.S. citizen for a wanted fugitive near the 1700 block of Howard Street in Evanston, Illinois, and attempted to take him into custody, leaving him with injuries to his head, neck, and teeth. Evanston Police Chief Schenita Stewart and Mayor Daniel Biss confirmed the man was released once agents determined he was not the person they sought and that he was a U.S. citizen; he was treated for minor injuries at St. Francis Hospital. Evanston police are investigating and preserving body-camera and witness video, and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment.
