The Intercept revealed Army CID closed a murder probe within six weeks despite a veteran's sworn confession to a 2010 Afghan killing
Event: October 7, 2026 Location: Banning, California (where CID took the confession; closure location not disclosed) Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Failure to discipline misconduct
On October 7, 2026, The Intercept published Army Criminal Investigation Division records showing that CID closed a murder investigation within about six weeks after an 82nd Airborne veteran gave a signed, sworn confession on March 28, 2023, to the 2010 killing of an unarmed Afghan man on a motorcycle in the Arghandab River Valley. According to the records, investigators never attempted to identify the dead man, a wounded woman, or a possible child at the scene, and sought no evidence beyond the testimony of unit members before concluding there was no probable cause that any soldier committed murder. CID declined to make the special agent in charge of the case available for an interview.

GAO found HHS illegally impounded $78 million in AHRQ health research funds
Event: October 7, 2026 Location: Washington, D.C. Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Ignoring statutory requirements, Bypassing Congress
On October 7, 2026, the Government Accountability Office issued a decision concluding that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services violated the Impoundment Control Act by declining to obligate or spend more than $78 million of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's fiscal year 2025 appropriation before the fiscal year closed. GAO found the withholding followed the layoff of the AHRQ staff responsible for grant administration and that HHS never sent Congress the special message the law requires to propose a rescission.

On October 7, 2026, internal Homeland Security Investigations records released by Democracy Forward under the Freedom of Information Act showed that the ICE investigative arm had scrutinized more than 150 nonprofits and voter-registration organizations it suspected of helping noncitizens register to vote. The agency's own reviews found no derogatory information on any of the New Jersey groups it examined.
