Earth Day Through the Tarot Elements!
An Ode to Our Planet
Hello all! It’s felt so sweet to see your familiar faces at spring events recently 🙂 And if you’re new here, welcome!
As the season warms, I’m more aware of the interplay between sun, soil, temperature, and rain. Tarot mirrors these four elements too! They shine through each suit: fire (wands), earth (pentacles), air (swords), and water (cups). Feeling into their interconnections can make readings (and life!) very enchanting.
This system has been one of tarot’s stranger intersections with my former career in environmental conservation. I hope my Earth Day jaunt through the energies below feels uplifting. Let me know which cards seem most like you! It takes all kinds 🌎
But if you’re feeling the angst of climate grief and colonialism, I’d love to support you during a soul care session or series, whether we share thoughtful conversation or nature-based practices from my experience with The Work That Reconnects.
And Mother’s Day is right around the corner! Reach out if you’d like to host a private tarot gathering or book a joint reading with discount code MAY26 for 11% off— a lovely activity to honor the special women of your heart 💐
Cheers, Haley Smith Kingsland

🌍 EARTH DAY 🌏

The World (Quintessence)
Indigenous cultures have stewarded Turtle Island for generations. Take a look at Native Land Digital’s interactive maps to learn more about the stories, ceremonies, and relationships of the ancestral homelands where you reside. I recently found out the nearby Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe uses quahog shells leftover from harvesting the meat to make beautiful jewelry. The more attuned we are, the more we build solidarity.
7 of Pentacles (Earth)
If you have access to outdoor space, why not consider growing your own kitchen garden, plus native plants as habitat for local wildlife. From common milkweed that attracts monarch butterflies to purple giant hyssop that supports native bumblebees, we are so lucky to have Blue Stem Natives right here in our backyard! A women-owned plant nursery in Norwell powered by serious spreadsheets. Stop by this Saturday for opening day!
Beyond the South Shore, plenty community endeavors strengthen social equity in agriculture. Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York centers BIPOC relationships with the land to uproot injustice in our food system and create a blueprint for collective liberation.
Knight of Wands (Fire)
Supporting licensed wildlife rehabbers is another great way to make a local impact. Devoted volunteers swoop in day and night to protect vulnerable animals and keep them stabilized around the clock. Now is when snapping turtles emerging from brumation are at risk of injury while crossing the road, and newborn raccoons, possums, fawns, and fox kits may become orphaned if their moms fall into the line of harm. I plan to donate 11% of my net profit this month to the New England Wildlife Center in Weymouth. Its expansive facility, caring staff, and educational programming make it such a vital rescue.
Page of Cups (Water)
The only fish in the tarot deck! 🐟 As the daughter of a commercial fisherman, I’m quite passionate about keeping fisheries in local hands with traditional-as-possible methods. The fisheries management team at my first job out of grad school was just beginning its collaboration with Rare’s Fish Forever Program. So I’ve enjoyed following its close partnerships with coastal communities (especially in the Philippines!) as it’s become a leader in ocean conservation.
Creatives fall within the Cups archetypes too, such as Brown/RISD M.A. Courtney Mattison who sculpts large-scale ceramic coral reefs, land artist Andy Goldsworthy (see his snaking stones outside the Duxbury Art Complex Museum), and those working towards sustainable fashion (Max Alexander strikes me as a literal Page of Cups!).
Queen of Swords (Air)
An excellent communicator, much like nature writers who translate complex scientific topics into language policymakers, laypeople, and philanthropists can understand. I admire the brilliant Robin Wall Kimmerer (beloved for weaving scientific information with personal stories and Indigenous wisdom), as well as ecological philosopher Báyò Akómoláfé, science journalist Ed Yong, and Aboriginal scholar Tyson Yunkaporta. Let me know your favorites to share in a future newsletter!
Organizations advocating for climate resilience and justice also fall within the Swords archetypes, like Intersectional Environmentalist, Indigenous Climate Action, and the National Resources Defense Council.
