Show Up Toronto - June 11, 2026

Hi friends and neighbours,

The first FIFA game in Toronto is taking place tomorrow. I’d plan some extra transit time, if you need to get around the city.

The Toronto Underhoused and Homeless Union is a collective of people living in shelters, encampments, insecure rentals, and social housing who work to advocate for themselves, and they’ve been on the forefront of documenting and calling out the increased abuse towards underhoused people in the lead-up to FIFA. “Cleaning up the city” ahead of major sporting events by displacing and abusing its most vulnerable residents is a tale as old as time. You can count on it as surely as you can count on the hosting city losing money.

TUHU has collaborated with the Toronto Drop-In Network to put together an outreach flyer for underhoused community members on getting around the city safely during this time of increased scrutiny and massively increased policing (and police funding).

Soccer’s not my thing, and FIFA is extra not my thing, but I recognize the value of sports in bringing a city together. As we welcome our international visitors over the next few weeks, don’t forget to extend that same grace and hospitality to our neigbours in our own city.

Thank you for showing up.

Jenny
