Show Up Toronto - June 18, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
The public consultation run by the feds about the future of the Billy Bishop island airport is running until July 24th, and the entire consultation is frankly laughable in its obvious bias. It doesn't account the responses of Torontonians differently than the responses of people who don't live here, and doesn't consider the possibility that people might not want the extension to happen at all. You should take the survey anyway, and give them an earful in any of the "additional comments" boxes. For example, the best way to mitigate the noise of building an extension is to: not build an extension.
This blatant exercise in (poorly) manufacturing consent is of a piece with how this federal government has approached the rest of its agenda, whether it's gutting environmental protection, destroying citizen privacy, kowtowing to illegal American wars, attacking refugee rights, defunding the public service, defunding the CBC despite explicitly campaigning on doing the opposite, or allowing business interests to reign supreme. The playbook is: decide what you want to do, ignore all naysaysers, and claim the inevitability of so-called progress. These tactic are reminiscent of the AI hype train, which Carney is also fully bought in on with very little critical thinking. (The version of the future in which kids are banned from talking to their friends but not the self-harm-robot is very bleak indeed.)
If there's one micrometer-thick silver lining to this mess, it's that people are starting to wake up to the fact that Carney's policy agenda is not much better than Pollievre's would've been. Just because he speaks with gravitas doesn't mean his words mean anything. I know there were folks in Toronto who—when Carney was first elected—were hopeful that he would curtail the worst of Ford's excesses. The bad news is that he's definitely not interested in doing that. The good news is that this is not actually a new state of affairs; actual change was only ever going to come from ordinary people getting organized.
Tomorrow evening Scarborough will be home to Ford Fest, an annual barbecue hosted by the premier in the hopes that some grilled meat will make ordinary people forget he actually hates their guts. A number of groups will be picketing and protesting, over Billy Bishop, the education cuts, workers rights, and more. Bring a friend, bring a sign, go yell at the government. More importantly, connect with others you can get organized with.
Thank you for showing up.
