Mulan, General and Ghost Bride
Previous Parts Here

~

They’re over a mile from camp, Mulan is getting sick of this, and Jinhai keeps urging her forward. Which is one thing for him, since he’s dead and things like sore muscles and eyes that feel like they’re filled with sand are long behind him, but Mulan has been marching for days and
she’s tired and she’s pretty sure the soles of her feet are about another dozen steps away from falling straight off.

If this were for anyone else but Lui Guo, Mulan would leave them to it. If someone wants to go off in the middle of the night, in the middle of a war, and get themselves killed by tripping over a tree stump or pissing off bandits or – whatever sort of trouble Jinhai seems convinced he’s getting up to in the middle of the night, she’d just leave them to it. They’re all going to die on a battlefield in the next week anyway.

“What’s your problem with him anyway?” she asks.

Jinhai doesn’t look back at her. It’s also really annoying that he’s staying one pace ahead of her, no matter how quickly she walks. He’s such a jerk. “He’s lying to you.”

She rolls her eyes. “I’m lying to everyone, all the time, about several things. Also he’s my superior officer, of course he’s not telling me everything. Would you? Did you?”

“It’s not the same thing,” he says.

It very much is. “Did you two know each other or something? Is that what this is about? Because I’m just trying to survive this war long enough to fulfill my family’s duty to the emperor, which he’s helping me do, so I don’t really want to get into whatever argument you two-”

“You’re my wife!” he snaps, coming to an abrupt halt. He’s breathing so hard that his shoulders are moving with it, which is pretty impressive considering he doesn’t need to breathe. “He’s not – appropriate. The others don’t know, but he does. He takes liberties with you.”

Mulan is pretty sure she should be offended at her dead husband accusing her of infidelity, but instead she has to bite down hard on the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing. “He really isn’t.”
