Mulan, General and Ghost Bride
Previous Parts Here

~

Jinhai glares, thinking that’s she’s mocking him. Which she is, sort of, just not how he probably thinks. Mulan hesitates, because this does feel like a betrayal of Lui Guo’s privacy, but also who is her dead husband who only she can see going to tell?

She opens her mouth to explain and his eyes widen before he’s jerking her to the ground behind the cover of a wide tree trunk and putting his hand on her mouth. She bites him, irritated, but even though she feels a sensation not dissimilar to teeth sinking into flesh, he doesn’t react at all.

The fact that she can’t beat him gets more and more unfair every day.

“I told you,” he hisses.

Mulan pulls his hand off his mouth and elbows him in the side, which achieves nothing but at least makes her feel a little better. She pushes herself up and peaks behind the tree.

She sees Lui Guo first, standing upright and perfectly fine, and feels a stab of relief. He’s here, he’s fine, there was no reason for her Jinhai to drag her out of bed. Then she notices he’s not alone, his arms around a smaller man who Lui Guo nearly dwarfs with his size, so much that Mulan can only make a sliver of him besides his arms around Lui Guo’s back. They’re kissing frantically, and, now that she’s listening, loudly.

Mulan feels her face heat. Well, she supposes she doesn’t have to worry about telling Jinhai the truth now, but at least she doesn’t have to explain to him why Lui Guo isn’t taking liberties with her. Or, well, maybe he is, but not in any way that Jinhai has to worry about. Not that she’s convinced he should be able to complain even if he had been, what with being dead and all. She hides back behind the tree and whispers, “There, happy? Now lets get back before they see us.”

She starts to stand up but Jinhai slams her back down. One good thing about being meeting her end as cannon fodder is going to be finally being able to hit him like he deserves. “What? No!”

This is ridiculous. “Why do you care who–”

He pushes her past the edge of the tree again. “Stop arguing with me and look.”

She’s looking because it’s either that or close or her eyes, but he’s taking this way too far. “What the hell is wrong… with…”

They’ve turned and Mulan now gets a clear look at the man Lui Guo is kissing. It’s not Yichen like she’d sometimes wondered about, or any of the men from camp, or even from a nearby village.

The man in Lui Guo’s arms is wearing the uniform belonging to Temujin’s army.
