Mulan, General and Ghost Bride
Previous Parts Here

~

Days of marching has left everyone weary and ill tempered. Mulan does her best not to show it, since the last thing anyone needs is an officer losing their temper at them right now. It means that when she’s shaken awake and rolls over to see Jinhai inches from her face, the near complete darkness meaning it’s not anything close to morning, her first thought is that it’s a shame she can’t kill her husband twice. “I’m sleeping. Go away.”

“Lui Guo left the camp,” he says, tugging her upright.

She tries to dive back into the warmth of her bedroll, but he won’t let go of her collar. Okay, fine, she can’t kill him, but if there was any mercy in the world, she’d at least be able to beat him. A wife that can’t bruise her husband when he’s getting on her last nerve is at a severe disadvantage. “So? He’s the general’s son, he can go for a walk if he wants to.”

“Why would he want to?” Jinhai presses. “He’s up to something. He’s been acting suspiciously this whole time–”

“He really hasn’t been,” she says tiredly, although now that she’s more firmly awake she can admit that maybe Jinhai isn’t totally off base right now. They’re all exhausted and Lui Guo may be enduring it better than the rest of them, but he’s not exempt from it. What could he be getting up to outside camp in the middle of the night when they’ll be heading out at first late? None of them get enough sleep as it is, certainly not enough to waste it. “Was he alone?”

“Yes.” He yanks her to her feet. She barely has the chance to get her shoes on, she’s wearing only a pants and shirt, and her hair falling out of its bun and getting in her face.

She ducks out of her tend at Jinhai’s urging, although she does stop by Lui Guo’s to double check that it’s empty, which she can tell Jinhai’s offended by. Whatever, she’s not going to waste time traipsing into the woods after her errant captain if he’s doing what she should be – sleeping. But he’s not, so she sighs and pinches her nose and says, “Which way?”
