Recipe: El Presidente
Unsure which president it was named for, but probably invented by a Cocktail King

Two weeks until Let’s Make Cocktails! comes out! Thanks so much if you’ve ordered it already; preorders are a massive help to authors. If you preorder it through Challengers Comics, you’ll get a free limited edition print!
AND if you’d like to get an early copy, there will be some available for sale at C2E2 this weekend! I’ll be signing them after my panel on Saturday.
In the meantime, I’ve got another “cutting room floor” cocktail for you today: El Presidente!

“El Rey de los Coteleros” is quite the impressive title. Constante was a fascinating person and reportedly an amazing bartender, slinging daiquiris for Hemingway, Spencer Tracy, and John Wayne. He started working at La Florida when he was still a teenager, but managed to purchase the establishment in 1918, and stayed behind the bar there creating innovative, creative drinks for the rest of his life.
In other cocktail news, I spoke to Chicago treasure (and the mad genius behind Crust Fund Pizza) John Carruthers for this excellent Block Club story about Green Chartreuse!
Upcoming things:
I’ll be at C2E2 this Saturday, March 28, to speak on a panel with Kim-Joy, Jarrett Melendez, and Lucy Knisley, and I’ll be signing copies of Let’s Make Cocktails! afterwards!
The first events for the launch of Let’s Make Cocktails! will be:
• Tuesday, April 7, 6-8 pm: Book Release Day at Billy Sunday
• Saturday, April 11, 6-8 pm: Cocktail Party at Challengers Comics

Shameless Self-Promotion:

There’s a big sale going on at Threadless if you’d like some tees or stickers or tote bags or anything with my silly drawings on them!
What I’m Into Lately:
In my ongoing experiment where I’ve been asking friends to recommend their favorite books, this week I read The Compound, by Aisling Rawle. (It was recommended to me by Liz, a friend’s neighbor, while we were both at said friend’s house for a pączki party, sampling many different kinds of delicious pączki together.) I don’t personally like reality TV – I get really uncomfortable watching interpersonal conflict, and I’ve always preferred fiction to nonfiction – but I can see why people enjoy it. This novel, about a Big Brother-style show set during a climate apocalypse, was pretty fun. I maybe wanted it to dive a little deeper into the darkness of bread-and-circuses-while-the-world-burns, but it was gripping and thoughtful, and every bit as addictive and compelling as a good reality tv show.
What Toki’s Into Lately:
I got my author copies of Let’s Make Cocktails this week! I thought Toki would be excited for me, but he’s only interested in eating the box they came in.
