This is what my at-home creative space looks like
Hello friend,
I recently came across this photo series of remote office desk setups. I love seeing other people's spaces, especially ones where they do creative work.
I thought it would be fun to share my at-home creative space.
First, photos:
The second photo is from 2017, when I first realized the importance of having a space for creative projects. I still have the same wooden table, but donated the sewing machine because I didn't use it often enough. I've since moved, but my creative space looks pretty much the same.
Here are the details:
- I got my art table on Craigslist several years ago for $40. It is well-worn and has lots of character! I love the extra storage space on the bottom, which I think was originally intended to store car tires, ha.
- I keep the scanner on the desk because my creative process involves collecting and scanning various ephemera.
- I use washi tape to hang most of the posters and art work.
- Most of the art I've collected from the yearly Albuquerque Zine Fest.
- The fake flowers came from last year's Halloween costume where I dressed up as Dani from the movie Midsommar. I think they really brighten up the space. Bonus, they won't die! (I'm not very good with plants.)
- I keep several candles on the desk. One of them smells like fruity pebbles.
What does your creative space look like? Maybe it's your kitchen counter? The inside of a journal?
And if you don't have a space yet, now is a great time to start making one. It doesn't have to be expansive or expensive. Start small and cheap. Declutter a corner. Repurpose an underutilized piece of furniture.
This haven can be a corner of a room, a nook under the stairs, even a window ledge. It is a reminder and an acknowledgement of the fact that our creator unfolds our creativity. Fill it with things that make you happy. Remember that your artist is fed by images. We need to unlearn our old notion that spirituality and sensuality don't mix. An artist's altar should be a sensory experience.
