Newsletter #28: Country Love Letter #1

The Rowan and Friends Newsletter

Hi!

This Wednesday we will be playing at the Golden Ball pub in York. It will be the 44th edition of our residency there.

Joining us will be York-diy-legends Troutflies & Leeds garage rockers The Fool.

The night starts at 8pm and we’ll have at least three new songs. One of which is called Country Love Song #8.

The Country Love Songs

The first Country Love Song - “Country Love Song #1” - was named as such because I thought the song was too sincere. And if I gave it an insincere title, I thought, maybe that would remove some of the sincerity.

We don’t tend to play “Country Love Song #2” & “Country Love Song #3”. But a demo exists of the latter. If you want to hear it, just ask me, and I’ll send you an mp3.

“Country Love Song #4” doesn’t exist. Or - I should say - only exists in half-written form in one of my notebooks. It didn’t make it off the page. But I named it. So that’s why it still exists in the sequence.

Along with the first one, “Country Love Song #5: Another Message” exists in recorded form on Rock N Roll Super Powers our first album. Of which, only one CD copy is left. It also exists in the same universe as the Message series of songs, which include the following:

  • Scrapheap Man

  • A Message

  • Country Love Song #5: Another Message

  • You Will Never Get That Feeling Back

“Country Love Song #6” is on our latest album (Go On! Roll That Old Boulder Away) and it is the last one we recorded. It features Jude Brothers on vocals who has just announced their latest album. Check it out :).

Following that there is “Country Love Song #7” which is in 5/4 and 3/4 time signatures, “Country Love Song #8“ which we will play at the Golden Ball on Wednesday, and “Country Love Song #9“ which is a bit of a downer.

After these ones, there is a new sequence of songs I have called the Country Hat Songs. The Country Love Songs tend to be sincere, yearning, and a little existential, while the Country Hat Songs tend to be cynical, accepting, and a little horny.

If you want a taste of this, “Country Hat Song #1” is recorded on Go On! Roll That Old Boulder Away, and also features Jude Brothers on vocals.

I’ve also written a Country Love Song that is set in the future called “Country Love Song 3000”. This has not made it out of the notebook yet, and may never. But I’ll let you know if it does.

Reminder

York-heads! See you on Wednesday at the Golden Ball.

Everyone-else-heads! Keep on rocking in the free world!

BEST WISHES
ROWAN :~) :~)
