taking silence as a companion
In lieu of a larger life update (it’s coming, I promise! After stone soup) here is some everyday wisdom that has been holding me in this time.
People are more likely to hurt one another when they feel rushed to speak or to respond.
that’s all. I think back to moments in the last year where I’ve spoken rashly, moments I’ve regretted, and they share a common theme: I didn’t slow down, pause, ask myself what’s really going on in there?
I’m not saying this is easy. I think there’s the resolve to slow down when one feels pressure, then there’s actually noticing when it’s live and interrupting unconscious speech.
But right now, in this time, I’m practicing being silent rather than speaking too much. For some of you who know me, this might be a big change.
Silence has been a dear companion. When I welcome silence, my listening sharpens and I can hear more and more from the subtle voices.
perhaps that’s why I haven’t been writing so much. To listen at the level I want to, it helps to put down the pen.
i am thinking of you often, though. Lot has been happening, i want to share, and im working on it.
for now, ill just ask: what would it give you to speak only from a place of ease, or flow, or connection?
I want to be able to stand by my words for a long time, to feel that my speech is truly aligned with my own and others’s well-being.
Words are powerful, and I’d like mine to serve our collective search for truth.
wishing you all well. Please do write me sometime :) I wanna know how you are
