New single today: "Frith Variations"
Our fifth full-length record, “Chronology,” is out in just over a month on La Reserve Records, but today we’re maximally excited to unleash the third and final pre-release single! “Frith Variations” is streamable on your choice of platform as well as the ol’Tube.
A little story about this one. “Theme and variations” has been a core concept of western music composition for hundreds of years, so when I heard a cool four-measure melody written by my friend JaRon Marshall while we were touring Europe a few years ago, I got inspired to develop some things out of it. We were staying in an apartment in Paris a day or two after playing at Ronnie Scott’s in London, and Ronnie’s is one of the most enjoyable rooms on earth in which to play music, in my opinion. It’s located on Frith Street, so after I wrote these ideas out on staff paper and put a demo together, “Frith Variations” came to be, although I didn’t do anything with it for a couple years.
We almost didn’t record it, it was the last track we did at our three-day Church House Studio session last October, but we liked how it turned out so much that we made it a single! Funny how the passage time works. And hey, that’s the concept of the whole record.
Give “Frith” a spin along with our other two singles, “Exposition” and “Mister Brown and Mochi Jones,” if you haven’t already. The remaining tunes (of which we’re quite proud) will be revealed on September 18. However, for Austin residents, you can get a hard copy on compact disc at our pre-release show at Monks Jazz Club on August 28. Monks finally opened their full, proper, bar-and-everything listening room and it’s spectacular. Livestream and in-person tickets are available at Monks’ website.
We hope you enjoy listening to “Frith Variations” at least half as much as we enjoyed playing it!
