What's Changing for RVR 2021?

Hey everyone! We know you are full of questions about Royal Vegas Retreat 2021. This week, we are going to explain a few important things about the event, what is changing for 2021, and what to look out for next.

Why RVR is different from your local anime convention

As anime conventions start to gear up to put their show on in person, you may be wondering what all of the fuss is about, and why we are treading so cautiously as we begin planning. For one thing, Even the largest J-fashion events tend to have 100s of attendees, rather than 1000s. This is good news for our event, as it means the potential blast radius is much smaller, right?

RVR Planning START: Fill Out Our Survey!

Hey, everyone! Happy Friday to you all - I hope you had a great week. This week’s blog post is short, but perhaps our most important one yet.

As you may remember, last summer, we postponed Royal Vegas Retreat. We are currently on the books with our venue, the MGM Grand Las Vegas, for November 19 - 21, 2021. With only a little more than 6 months to these dates, it is time for us to start planning in earnest, despite the continued ambiguity around the end of pandemic life. We are moving forward with planning with the caveat that we may postpone our event again.

You Deserve a Partner that Respects Your Interests - Including Lolita Fashion

Hello friends! Nif here with our first real post written directly on Buttondown.

Content warning: discussion of recent acts of police violence

Take the time to take care of yourselves, your families, and communities in the wake of Daunte Wright's murder at the hands of police, the sham trials of convicted cops, and callous and complicit local governments allowing it all to happen. We encourage you all to give directly to Daunte Wright's family's GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/dauntewright and support mutual aid projects in the Twin Cities, like Minneapolis Northside Mutual Aid: https://opencollective.com/mpls-northside-mutual-aid

Beyond that, we encourage you to get involved in your city's fight to defund and abolish your local police. Discuss ways of keeping your community safe that don't involve calling the cops - see the zine 1 Million Experiments by Project Nia. Keep having discussions with your family, friends, and comm. Lolita fashion isn't an escape until it's an escape for all of us.

We're on Buttondown!

Hey folks! This is going to be a short post to explain why we moved platforms from Substack to Buttondown.

Substack has recently become very public about the way they curate and fund writers on their platform. They fund writers like Graham Linehan (notably banned from Twitter - which, if you're on Twitter, you know that it takes a LOT to get banned), Jesse Singal, and other anti-trans bigots whose rhetoric prevents trans people from getting effective medical care, be respected as human beings, and be safe in the world. Substack has allegedly addressed these issues in a non-explanation, and I don't really recommend you read that. I would take a look at Jude Ellison Sady Doyle's post that addresses this issue directly from a trans perspective.

Lolita fashion is and has always been political, and as such, if we hope to monetize our blog/email newsletter to raise funds for Royal Vegas Retreat - whether it happens in 2021 or in the future - we have to do so in a way that aligns with our values. Non-normative gender presentation and identity are integral to Lolita fashion and its history. We cannot tolerate Substack's anti-trans hatred, we do not endorse platforms that thrive on outrage, and as such, we have moved to Buttondown.

All of our existing subscribers have automatically been moved over - so you should be seeing this email in your inbox on Friday, April 9 at 4:20 PM PT. Our Substack will stay up so our links stay intact, but all further email updates will come from our Buttondown.

They Can't All Be Winners

Hey folks! I hope you’re all hanging in there. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the long, dark winter feels like it’s going to be over soon. And we’re hearing that some of you may even be vaccinated already! Is it too soon to dream of our shared vacation in the desert? We’re still cautiously optimistic.

This week in our validating content for newcomers series, I’m here to talk about, well, coords I made and didn’t like! Real clunkers, honestly!

In Defense of the Impulse Buy

Before we get started, we’d like to draw your attention to the organization Red Canary Song which provides advocacy and mutual aid for the intersection of Asian migrant and sex worker communities. If you have the ability to donate them, or to individuals who were affected by the mass shooting in Atlanta this week, we encourage you to do so.

Content note: this post mentions shopping, addiction, alcoholism, cigarette smoking, and elitism.
