Observations

Today's setup: CPI came in exactly as forecast — headline 3.4%, core 2.4% — but the supercore component (services ex-shelter) re-accelerated to 3.02%, pushing the market's September Fed rate-hike probability from 70% to 90% overnight. Equities are modestly lower across the board, though volatility (VIX −8.46%) is paradoxically falling: the in-line headline removed uncertainty even as the rate path got more hawkish. The deepest pain sits in rate-sensitive and cyclical sectors — metals & mining, homebuilders, and semiconductors — while financials and communication services are the relative havens. Europe is outperforming, with DAX and FTSE both green, as ECB hawkishness and strong German trade data provide their own regional lift.

The yield curve is confirming the hawkish read in textbook fashion. Short-end yields (5-year) edged up while the 10-year and 30-year ticked lower — the classic bear-flattening pattern that emerges when the market believes near-term rates will rise but that tighter policy will ultimately dampen long-run growth. This move is especially meaningful for NASDAQ (VXN +4.53% even as the broad VIX fell) and for homebuilders like ITB (−2.31%), whose demand is acutely sensitive to front-end mortgage-rate pressure. Regional banks (KRE +0.49%) and insurance (KIE +0.27%) benefit from the same curve shift through wider net interest margins.

Oil's first two-week decline — WTI down nearly 3% to $99.43 — provides a countervailing relief signal. Oil falling softens the commodity-channel feed into CPI, which is exactly the kind of disinflationary nuance that could temper the Fed's hike trajectory even as the headline supercore re-accelerated. Gold (+1.31%) and silver (+1.81%) are bid as inflation-hedge and safe-haven assets, though gold miners (GDX −3.46%) are selling off sharply despite the metal's gain — miners trade more like equities on a risk-off day, and today the equity-market drag overwhelmed the gold-price tailwind. Crude oil's implied volatility index (OVX) is surging more than 20%, a striking divergence from falling oil prices that warrants close monitoring.

In agricultural markets, the seasonal September pattern is playing out clearly. Corn (+3.11%), wheat (+2.21%), and sugar (+2.72%) are all rallying into months that historically show consistent long-biased returns, supported by empirical backtests going back 10-20 years. Coffee is the stark outlier — a −9.26% drop with no obvious supply-shock catalyst, making it the session's biggest puzzle in the commodities complex.
