Observations
Today's setup: The day is dominated by a synchronized global central-bank tightening signal: a hotter-than-expected PPI print pushed traders to fully price in a Fed hike for October, while ECB President Lagarde confirmed a hawkish trajectory with 75 basis points of additional ECB hikes now priced through October 2027. Treasury yields surged across the curve — the 5-year led higher at +1.54%, the 10-year followed at +1.34%, and the 30-year added +1.00% — bringing both the 5-year and 10-year to virtual 52-week highs (4.685% and 4.902% respectively). Against this backdrop, most equity indices fell modestly, with the exception of META which surged +6.55% on a JPMorgan AI upgrade, masking an otherwise broad selloff.
When short-end and mid-curve yields rise faster than the long end, the curve flattens — and that is exactly what happened today. A flattening yield curve driven by rate-hike repricing typically pressures growth assets through higher discount rates, while also squeezing rate-sensitive sectors. This explains the broad sector weakness: industrials fell −1.51%, consumer discretionary −1.34%, utilities −1.17%, staples −1.15%, and real estate −1.12%. Home construction (ITB, −0.81%) is particularly exposed: mortgage rates track the 10-year closely, and today's yield spike will push financing costs higher for both buyers and builders.
Despite the rate-driven headwinds, technology held flat (XLK 0.00%) and semiconductors eked out +0.10%. This resilience reflects the powerful AI capital-expenditure cycle that has defined the market since 2023 — TSMC reported revenue up 53% year-over-year on AI chip demand, and JPMorgan's upgrade of Meta on AI agent monetization signals that analysts believe the monetization phase is arriving. When AI-driven revenue growth is visible enough for tier-one analysts to upgrade with conviction, it can temporarily override the discount-rate pressure that rising yields would normally impose on technology valuations. This is the key divergence to watch: if yields stay elevated, the AI tailwind will eventually need to clear a much higher earnings bar.
Energy was the other standout: WTI crude surged +4.47% to $100.34, lifting XLE +0.83% and XOP +0.57%. A crude spike at this magnitude re-accelerates the inflation narrative that drove today's rate repricing in the first place — higher energy feeds into CPI and PPI, which in turn gives central banks more reason to hold rates high. The VIX rose +7.78% to 17.74, remaining in a normal volatility regime but flagging that options markets are increasingly cautious. Fear & Greed stands at 36 — firmly in Fear territory.
