Observations

Today's setup: Markets are absorbing a classic geopolitical oil shock: Iran's IRGC has declared a maritime restricted zone and struck oil tankers in Iraqi waters near the Strait of Hormuz, pushing WTI crude up 3% toward $96 and energy volatility up more than 8%. That single catalyst has activated the familiar triple-shock pattern — a crude futures spike, a surge in energy implied volatility, and broad equity risk-off. Dow futures are the weakest (-1.18%) while NASDAQ holds better (-0.32%), and SPX remains comfortably above its 200-day moving average, suggesting the underlying trend is intact even as today's headlines weigh.

European markets face a second headwind on top of the energy shock: traders have sharply repriced ECB and Bank of England rate paths, now pricing four more hikes by end-2027. That hawkish shift strengthens the euro (+0.21%), which mechanically compresses DAX earnings for the index's heavy exporter base — auto, industrials, and chemicals companies translate their USD-denominated revenues at worse rates. The result is DAX underperforming at −1.46% even before factoring in the energy shock common to all global indices.

Interest rates are pressing against their 52-week highs (5-year at 4.59%, 10-year at 4.81%), and the most rate-sensitive sector tells the story plainly: homebuilders (ITB) are down 3.05%, trading near 52-week lows. Higher borrowing costs feed directly into mortgage rates, compress demand, and squeeze builder margins — the sector's 52-week position of just 19.5% reflects how much pressure has already built. On the other end, semiconductors (SMH +1.19%) and Taiwan Semiconductor (+2.35%) are bucking the risk-off trend, lifted by TSMC's High-NA lithography roadmap news and the AI capex backdrop underscored by OpenAI's $750 billion compute-spending projection through 2030.

The agricultural complex is worth watching: corn (+3.67%), sugar (+6.30%), cotton (+5.05%), and wheat (+2.23%) are surging well beyond their seasonal norms for September — likely reflecting supply-chain disruption fears spreading beyond crude oil. The dollar's mild softening (-0.16%) adds a small tailwind for dollar-denominated commodity prices. Coffee is the outlier, down nearly 7%, on what appears to be weather- and supply-specific dynamics rather than the broader macro move. Fear & Greed sits at 39 (Fear), a contrarian reminder that pessimism is still the prevailing sentiment despite SPX trading nearly 7.4% above its 200-day moving average.
