Observations

Today's setup: US equities closed Friday with a broad risk-on session — the S&P 500 +0.86%, Nasdaq +0.96%, Dow +0.98% — while the VIX collapsed 11% to 15.84, signaling a sharp retreat in fear. The SPX sits 6.9% above its 200-day moving average, reinforcing the structural uptrend. Yet the Fear & Greed reading remains at 33 (Fear territory), and Asian markets diverged sharply lower (Nikkei −1.93%, KOSPI −1.76%, TAIEX −1.61%), suggesting the US rally on Friday was not a globally synchronized move. The week's dominant themes — AI demand confirmation, geopolitical oil signals, and rising front-end rates — pulled in different directions.

The biggest macro headline was Trump's statement that oil prices would plunge once the Iran conflict ends. When geopolitical tension threatens a major oil-producing region, a "war premium" of roughly 5–15% typically embeds in crude prices. As negotiations or signals of de-escalation emerge, that premium deflates — which is what drove WTI crude down 2.4% to $100 on Friday. Notably, energy equities (XLE +0.32%) barely responded to the drop, and the oil & gas E&P sector (XOP) sits at 96.7% of its 52-week range — a reminder that producer economics and hedging programs often insulate stock prices from near-term crude moves.

TSMC's record monthly revenue was the other headline of note. When TSMC prints record numbers, it validates that hyperscaler AI infrastructure spending continues to accelerate — Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and others funnel their AI capex directly into TSMC's foundry business, making the company a clean read on whether the AI buildout is real or cooling. Friday's data said real: AMD's AI ramp was confirmed, semiconductors (SMH +1.47%) and tech (XLK +1.32%) were the session's top performers. The pricing-power caveat — TSMC's ability to raise prices may squeeze chip buyers — is worth watching for downstream margins.

The rate picture is sending a nuanced signal. The 5-year Treasury yield rose 5.8 basis points to 4.79% while the 30-year actually fell slightly to 5.35% — a pattern where the front end of the curve rises faster than the long end. Normally this combination (rising short-term rates, stable long-term rates) would pressure rate-sensitive sectors like real estate and home construction. Instead, XLRE gained 0.86% and home construction (ITB +1.50%) was the top sector performer — a divergence that likely reflects the market looking past near-term rate noise rather than signaling that housing has broken free of its rate constraint. With 10-year yields near their 52-week high and utilities (XLU −0.31%) sitting at just 10.7% of their 52-week range, the rate pressure on duration-sensitive sectors remains very much in the picture.
