Observations
Today's setup: A Saudi oil pipeline strike overnight is the dominant macro catalyst, sending WTI crude above $104 — its highest level in months — and lifting energy volatility sharply. US equity futures are fractionally positive despite the geopolitical shock, with the VIX jumping nearly 12% to 17.71. The apparent contradiction resolves when you look at the calendar: markets appear to be buying options protection ahead of this week's Federal Reserve rate decision, pushing the fear gauge up even as equity prices hold.
The classic playbook for a geopolitical oil shock calls for gold to rally alongside crude, as both safe-haven and supply-risk bids kick in. That's not what's happening today — gold is down 2.2%. The explanation is the simultaneous dollar surge: when geopolitical fear lifts the dollar as a safe-haven currency at the same time it lifts oil prices, those two forces compete for the gold bid, and the stronger dollar suppresses the dollar-denominated gold price. It's a textbook tension, and today the dollar is winning.
Semiconductor names are outperforming despite the AI safety warning headlines. The underlying story is that the AI hardware capex cycle remains intact: hyperscalers are still building out data centers at record pace, and a single regulatory commentary note does not alter the multi-year infrastructure spending trajectory that is the primary earnings driver for the sector. SMH leads today's sectors at +1.47%.
Elevated bond yields continue to compress the most rate-sensitive parts of the market. The 10-year Treasury yield is sitting at 4.98%, just one basis point from its 52-week high — a level that puts persistent pressure on utilities, homebuilders, and REITs, all of which are near the bottom of their 52-week price ranges. The Fed's decision this week is likely to keep that pressure in focus regardless of which way rates move.
