Observations
Today's setup: Wall Street opens the session near record highs, with the S&P 500 up 0.58%, even as long-dated Treasury yields push to fresh 52-week highs (10-year at 5.35%) and the dollar firms. Overseas the picture is weaker — KOSPI fell 1.98% and the DAX 1.26% — and escalating attacks around the Strait of Hormuz are keeping risk sentiment fragile ahead of the Fed minutes.
Rates and the dollar. The 5-, 10- and 30-year yields all rose roughly 5–8 basis points, leaving the curve shape largely intact, so the move reads as a repricing of the overall rate path rather than a steepening. A strategist poll shows 28 of 30 expecting the 10-year higher still within three months. A stronger dollar (DXY +0.63%) is consistent with that, and gold (−2.2%) and silver (−2.7%) both gave ground.
Equities and volatility. US equities rising alongside higher yields and a higher VIX (15.75, +4.9%) is an unusual pairing: price action is firm while hedging demand creeps up. Utilities led sectors (+2.98%), with real estate and consumer sectors also firmer, while biotech (−2.34%) lagged. Semiconductors were flat near highs.
Energy. WTI edged up to $89.90 with crude implied volatility still elevated near 49; the EU is convening an energy task force today to discuss oil and diesel stock releases.
