Observations

Today's setup: The latest US cash session finished with the S&P 500 up 0.73%, the NASDAQ up 1.19% and semiconductor shares leading the sector tables. VIX fell to 15.31, within its normal band, while the S&P remained 6.9% above its 200-day average. The weekend news shifts attention toward Hormuz transit and oil supply. Those reports arrived after the US cash session: Friday’s equity advance and the latest commodity quotes do not measure the market’s response to Sunday’s developments.

Oil risk travels through shipping and inflation. Tanker attacks can restrict supply through insurance costs and operators’ willingness to sail, even without a new physical blockade. Unchanged OPEC+ quotas address production policy; they do not resolve safe transit or export access. Asian importers are particularly exposed to Gulf energy, while fertilizer disruption can transmit into agricultural costs with a lag. Higher energy costs also complicate inflation control and increase the valuation pressure from sustained borrowing costs.

Rates rose without a stronger dollar. Five-year Treasury yields increased 5.0 basis points, ten-year yields 4.0 and thirty-year yields 2.7, flattening the curve as shorter maturities rose faster. The dollar index was essentially unchanged, so the usual higher-yield-to-dollar-strength channel did not confirm the move. Higher long-term rates pressure housing affordability and the discounted value of property and growth-company cash flows. Homebuilders fell 0.84%, but technology and REITs rose, showing that the rate headwind did not dominate every sector.

Technology leadership remains selective. In the current AI investment cycle, spending on computing infrastructure feeds demand for chips, manufacturing equipment and power infrastructure. Semiconductor shares gained 2.07%, and technology sits near the top of its annual range, while utilities and homebuilders are near the bottom of theirs. That pattern is consistent with selective enthusiasm for technology suppliers; it does not establish a fresh spending catalyst. Separately, gold miners gained 1.20% while the gold ETF fell 0.68%, a divergence from their usual shared exposure to bullion prices.

Equity volatility eased, with sentiment still fearful. VIX and NASDAQ implied volatility both fell alongside higher equity indices. VIX at 15.31 remains above the exceptionally low levels associated with crowded volatility selling. CNN’s Fear reading of 31/100 shows a more cautious sentiment backdrop than the latest equity gains alone suggest. Equity implied volatility and corporate credit spreads measure different risks, so a lower VIX does not by itself establish improving credit conditions.
