Observations

Today's setup: Friday’s US advance coexisted with a rise in Treasury yields: the S&P 500 gained 0.73%, the NASDAQ 1.19%, and semiconductors 2.07%. The rate move therefore did not produce a broad selloff in growth shares. VIX fell to 15.31, while the dollar slipped despite higher US yields. The combination points to selective equity strength rather than uniform relief across assets.

Treasuries raised the financing hurdle. The 5-year yield rose 5 basis points to 5.055%, the 10-year 4 basis points to 5.277%, and the 30-year 2.7 basis points to 5.630%, narrowing both the 5-to-10-year and 10-to-30-year spreads. Higher benchmark yields transmit into mortgages, business borrowing and the discount rates used to value future cash flows. Homebuilders fell 0.84% and sit near the bottom of their annual range, but technology and property ETFs gained: the rate headwind was visible without dominating every sector. The dollar’s 0.17% decline also diverged from the usual capital-flow response to higher US yields.

In the current AI hardware investment cycle, semiconductor suppliers receive revenue from infrastructure spending that imposes a cash-flow burden on the companies doing the spending. Semiconductor outperformance fits that distinction, and technology sits at 97.89% of its annual range. Manufacturing-roadmap news and a reported data-center tax benefit add context, but a tax benefit offsets only part of the spending burden; it does not establish the eventual return on that investment.

Energy and precious metals did not show a broad geopolitical shock bid in the latest session. WTI fell 1.90% and gold 0.95%, whereas acute supply disruption would normally lift crude and safe-haven demand would support gold. The witness report of smoke near an Aramco facility is a separate, later development and establishes neither lost production nor a cause for Friday’s close. Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of owning gold, while the softer dollar would ordinarily provide support; gold fell despite that currency support. Gold miners gained 1.20% against the gold ETF’s 0.68% decline, a break from their usual amplified co-movement.

Equity-option volatility eased alongside the rally, with NASDAQ volatility down 5.82% and VIX down 6.59%. VIX remains in a normal band, above the exceptionally low levels associated with crowded volatility selling. Crude volatility is still 51.00, and the broader Fear & Greed reading is Fear at 31/100, so the equity advance sits alongside more cautious signals elsewhere.
