Observations

Today's setup: Central banks are the story. The Bank of England hiked to 4% with broad internal support, and Standard Chartered now forecasts a 25bps Fed hike in December — a hawkish one-two that would normally push yields sharply higher. Instead, 10-year Treasury yields edged lower by around 4 basis points to 4.96%, suggesting markets are pricing the terminal rate as fixed while adjusting the cut-path forward rather than re-marking the ceiling. The Dow fell 1.2% on that shift while the NASDAQ barely moved (−0.01%), pointing to a split between rate-sensitive value names and the AI-driven tech complex.

A striking feature of the session is the VIX falling 12.4% to 15.5 on a day when equities were modestly lower — volatility is compressing even as macro uncertainty is elevated. This is consistent with how markets typically behave after central bank decisions resolve the near-term uncertainty: the actual announcement removes the known unknown, and implied volatility sells off. With VIX now near its 52-week low and CNN's Fear & Greed gauge still deep in Fear territory (26/100), there is a meaningful divergence between options-market complacency and survey-based sentiment — a contrarian flag worth watching.

Energy is the week's clear laggard: WTI crude fell through $100 to $99.9, dragging the XLE Energy ETF down 2.9% and oil E&P names (XOP) down nearly 4%. The energy sector was sitting at 91% of its 52-week range before today's drop — so this is a pullback from elevated levels rather than a fresh low. Semiconductors diverged sharply in the other direction: TSMC gained on the news of 2-nanometer chip readiness entering the smartphone supply chain, and the chipmaker just surpassed Qualcomm in market cap. The SMH semiconductor ETF gained 0.6% even as the broader market slipped — the AI hardware demand cycle continues to dominate the narrative for that segment.

Housing data came in soft, with starts and permits both missing estimates. This is the kind of print that typically reinforces pressure on home-construction and rate-sensitive real estate names: ITB (home construction) fell 1.1% and is now near the bottom of its 52-week range (10%), while VNQ and XLRE REITs both drifted lower. The signal here is that higher rates are still biting the most interest-rate-sensitive parts of the economy even as labor markets remain strong (Initial Jobless Claims at a lean 196k).
