Observations

Today's setup: The weekend has handed Tuesday (US markets closed Monday for Labor Day) two competing macro forces: a hawkish Federal Reserve pre-positioning into next week's CPI print — with the 10-year Treasury yield climbing to 4.78% — and a sharp geopolitical escalation from Iran, where the IRGC claimed to have struck a US aircraft carrier and destroyer with ballistic missiles, a claim the US military has not verified. Friday's equity close (the data behind these tables) predated those weekend headlines, which explains the relative calm in equities: the SPX finished down only −0.38%, with semiconductors actually leading the market higher.

The semiconductor surge — the SMH ETF +2.61% and Taiwan Semiconductor +2.85% — reflects the prevailing view that AI infrastructure spending remains the dominant regime driver. This tech-led strength is running into an unusual contradiction: Iran's regional escalation raises a real, if underappreciated, supply-chain vulnerability for Taiwan's chip fabs. Qatar is the world's largest helium supplier, and helium is a critical process gas in semiconductor wafer fabrication — a conflict that closes the Strait of Hormuz or disrupts Gulf shipping would create a supply squeeze that directly affects TSMC's production capacity. Markets chose, at least through Friday, to focus on the AI thesis rather than the supply-chain tail risk. Tuesday's open, post-news-cycle, may re-price that.

The Iran escalation itself did trigger the textbook weekend response in gold futures: gold was up roughly 1% on Sunday pricing, consistent with the pattern where acute geopolitical events draw safe-haven flows into precious metals. But crude oil finished Friday flat despite OPEC+ maintaining unchanged output quotas, suggesting the market had limited appetite for a fresh geopolitical risk premium in energy heading into the long weekend. That OPEC+ stability is a genuine offset: if Iran fears had been the dominant crude driver, you would expect more upside pressure — and it wasn't there.

Tesla's −5.92% was the standout negative. The commercial robotaxi launch in Austin — marketed under the Cybercab brand with a gold finish — failed to generate the enthusiasm the company needs to justify its autonomous-driving premium. The Fear & Greed index sits at 42 ("Fear"), a contrarian data point that historically has accompanied better-than-average forward returns over a 3-6 month window, though the near-term catalyst calendar (CPI, Iran, post-holiday positioning) keeps the setup genuinely two-sided heading into the week.
