Observations

Today's setup: Equity markets pulled back modestly on Friday (SPX −0.38%) while Asia closed sharply higher, driven by a landmark $550 billion Japan-US investment framework targeting AI infrastructure and semiconductor supply chains. The broad theme is a deepening of AI-cycle capex commitments at the geopolitical level — not just corporate spending. On the other side, Tesla's twin hit from a weak Cybercab unveil and a new federal safety probe dragged consumer discretionary lower. The Russia-Ukraine situation sent mixed signals: US diplomatic contact in Moscow raised hopes, while simultaneous Russian strikes on Kyiv airports and a Dnipro steel plant underscored ongoing wartime uncertainty.

The Japan-US semiconductor pact is the most consequential macro signal of the session. Agreements of this scale — half a trillion dollars in committed cross-border investment with AI and chip manufacturing at the center — extend the AI capital expenditure cycle that has been the engine behind semiconductor outperformance since 2023. TSMC, which produces the overwhelming majority of the world's most advanced chips, rose 2.85%, and the broader semiconductor ETF (SMH) gained 2.61%. South Korean tech stocks (KOSPI +1.64%) and Taiwan (TAIEX +1.51%) responded in kind. This is the regime-level channel at work: government-backed investment pacts reduce supply-chain uncertainty and act as a demand floor for foundry capacity.

The US yield curve edged higher at the 5- and 10-year points (10Y +4.7bps to 4.78%; 5Y +0.91bps to 4.55%) while the long end barely moved (30Y +0.6bps to 5.25%), producing a mild bear-steepening in the middle of the curve. This dynamic is generally supportive for banks — which borrow short and lend long — and KRE gained 0.53%. Gold, which typically softens when real yields rise, fell only 0.34%, a modest move that may reflect some continuing geopolitical demand cushion from the Ukraine situation.

On the geopolitical front, the picture is contradictory. US envoys Witkoff and Kushner traveling to Moscow is a de-escalation signal, and the Kremlin announced a temporary pause on Kyiv strikes ahead of the meeting. But Russia simultaneously struck Kyiv's airports and a major steel plant in the Dnipro region — a reminder that these processes are rarely linear. Investors pricing in a peace dividend should note that escalation and negotiation often proceed in parallel in active conflicts, and a single meeting rarely resolves a multi-year war.
