Observations

Today's setup: Friday's session delivered a split picture: AI and semiconductor stocks powered higher across Asia — KOSPI surged +4.61%, TAIEX +1.67%, Nikkei +2.12% — while US large-cap indices slipped marginally (S&P -0.38%, Nasdaq -0.29%) and geopolitical risk re-entered the picture via a Houthi drone strike on a Saudi Aramco refinery. Volatility remains subdued (VIX 15.22, "normal" regime), but sentiment reads cautious at Fear & Greed 42/100. The first meaningful test comes Tuesday morning when US markets reopen with the Houthi story and a strong Eurozone GDP print both priced in by global participants but not yet by US traders.

The AI hardware cycle is the dominant macro theme. NVIDIA's $20 billion Groq bet going live this year and OpenAI's Astra model launch both point to sustained hyperscaler capital expenditure — the engine behind the semiconductor sector's outperformance. KOSPI's +4.61% daily move reflects this: South Korea is a dense proxy for memory chip demand, and when a major new AI model ships, memory and logic suppliers rally in unison. TAIEX (+1.67%) reinforces the same read with TSMC at its core. The pattern is well-established — each major AI capability release triggers a re-rating of the hardware supply chain.

A geopolitical shock is priced into crude futures but US equity markets haven't reacted yet. A Houthi drone strike on a Saudi Aramco refinery is the type of event that typically produces a brief spike in crude, a bid in gold and defense, and pressure on airline and consumer stocks. Gold already moved +1.06% Friday while gold volatility (GVZ) fell — a calm-rally pattern rather than a panic bid, suggesting the market is treating this as a contained incident. WTI Crude printed flat at $91.48 on stale pre-holiday pricing. The first indication of how the US market is pricing the risk premium will come at Tuesday's open.

The Eurozone GDP beat (+0.6% vs. +0.4% forecast) is a meaningful positive surprise. Revised GDP above forecast signals that Europe's growth engine is running warmer than expected — this tends to support the euro and European equities, and can reduce pressure on the ECB to accelerate easing. The FTSE 100 (+0.27%) and DAX (-0.28%, roughly flat) had a mixed Friday before the revision was published. European bonds and equities will likely re-price this positively at Monday's open.
