Observations

Today's setup: A quiet Sunday with markets closed, but Friday's session left two clear divides: the semiconductor complex sold off sharply (SMH −3.47%, KOSPI −1.79%) while communication services and consumer discretionary gained on the back of Meta's $17 billion legal settlement. Meanwhile US Treasury yields rose significantly on the short end — the 5-year yield climbed roughly 8–9 basis points while the 30-year moved only about 2 basis points — a pattern typically associated with expectations of tighter Fed policy in the near term. Equity volatility (VIX 14.43) remains in calm territory, and the S&P 500 sits well above its 200-day average.

The semiconductor move is worth watching for what it reveals about the AI trade. Korean equities — a leading indicator for the global semis supply chain — fell nearly 2% in the same session. When Korean tech stocks weaken, the pressure tends to transmit quickly into global semiconductor names through the same hedge-fund positioning that amplifies the move: investors who use Korean ETF options as proxies for the broader chip sector unwind those hedges as prices fall, which adds selling momentum to names like TSMC and the VanEck SMH ETF. Taiwan's TAIEX held up (+0.77%) and TSMC only pulled back modestly, suggesting the sell-off is more positioning-driven than a fundamental reassessment of AI chip demand.

The sharp front-end yield rise alongside a flat dollar index is an unusual combination. Normally, rising short-term Treasury yields attract capital inflows that strengthen the dollar. That the dollar stayed flat on Friday — even as euro and sterling fell slightly versus the dollar in spot markets — may reflect competing dynamics or simply the noise of a late-Friday summer session. It is worth watching early next week to see whether yields and the dollar realign.

Meta's $17 billion settlement, announced after the close, pushed communication services higher and sent Meta stock up over 1%. The legal resolution removes a significant known risk, and the market's positive reaction suggests investors view it as the end of that chapter rather than the beginning of further legal exposure. Meta's parallel announcement of continued AI workforce reallocation reinforces the company's capex direction — it remains a heavy spender on AI infrastructure, which is expansionary for its suppliers but compresses its own free-cash-flow margins over time.

Grains are worth a brief note: corn, wheat, and soybeans all sit within a few percent of their 52-week highs, which runs counter to news of a 28% surge in Ukrainian grain exports. When prices hold near highs despite increased supply, it typically means demand-side or seasonal factors are doing the heavier lifting — in this case the late-summer/early-fall demand calendar for northern-hemisphere crop procurement.
