Observations
Today's setup: US-Iran military clashes — the first exchange in a month — have broken Brent through the $90 threshold and sent WTI up 3.3%, which is pulling long-dated Treasury yields sharply higher (the 30-year now sits at 5.25%, up nearly 1% on the day and approaching its 52-week high). Equities are absorbing the shock selectively: energy and communication services are up, while semiconductors (−3.5%), metals & mining (−3.5%), gold ETFs (−3.2%), and biotech (−2.7%) are all taking meaningful hits. The S&P 500 retreats a modest −0.25%, still comfortably above its 200-day moving average.
The yield curve is bear-steepening — long rates are rising faster than short rates — driven by rising inflation-risk expectations as crude oil price spikes filter through to the CPI outlook. A sustained oil-price surge historically flows into consumer prices via energy and transportation costs within one to two months, which then constrains the Fed's ability to cut rates. Today's hawkish commentary from Fed-aligned voices amplifies that read. The Russell 2000 (small-cap) underperforms at −1.4%, consistent with the historical pattern where higher short-term borrowing costs hurt smaller companies with floating-rate debt.
The most counterintuitive move today is in gold: despite a textbook geopolitical shock that typically bids precious metals higher, gold futures are down −0.9% and the gold ETF (GLD) is off −3.2%. Gold volatility (GVZ) is also falling, adding to the anomaly. The most plausible explanations are margin-driven liquidation of gold positions to cover losses elsewhere, or that the oil price itself is absorbing the safe-haven geopolitical flow. The US dollar, meanwhile, is barely responding (DXY −0.1%), which would normally support gold — so this divergence is worth watching.
On the individual-stock side, Meta (+1.2%) is the standout on news that Bernstein sees Meta overtaking Google in search advertising revenue by year-end, driven by AI-powered targeting. Tesla unveiled a simplified, lower-priced Model 3 in Hong Kong and Macau — potentially a volume-first move in a competitive Asia market, though margin implications bear watching. General Motors scored a positive labor outcome with its Canadian workers approving a deal that adds truck production to its Ontario plant.
