Observations

Today's setup: Friday's session saw NASDAQ surge (+1.04%) while small-caps retreated (−1.12%), a familiar divergence: Treasury yields rose sharply — the 5-year up nearly two full ticks — pulling the dollar higher and compressing rate-sensitive sectors, while mega-cap tech continued to benefit from AI-driven earnings narratives. The S&P held its gains (+0.47%) as a handful of large-cap names did the heavy lifting, but the breadth underneath was notably thin.

The sharply rising mid-curve yields (5Y +1.93%, 10Y +1.03%) alongside a strengthening dollar (+0.52%) follow a straightforward pattern: when US Treasury rates climb, foreign capital flows into dollar-denominated assets, reinforcing the currency. That same dynamic bore down on gold (−1.73%) and silver (−2.37%), both of which tend to soften when real rates and the dollar rise in tandem. Gold miners fell in line with the metal.

Rate-sensitive sectors bore the brunt of Friday's yield move. Utilities (−1.79%), real estate (−1.35%), REITs (−1.39%), and home construction (−0.92%) all sold off — a predictable response when the 30-year Treasury climbs to 5.21% and discount rates for these capital-intensive, long-duration businesses rise. Small-cap companies (Russell 2000, −1.12%) face the same squeeze: they rely more heavily on floating-rate debt, so a rising rate environment hits them harder than the mega-cap index names that dominate NASDAQ.

The AI hardware and semiconductor narrative kept technology in the lead. Meta's decision to open-source its most powerful language model is a major strategic move — it reframes the competitive landscape for AI tools and puts pressure on proprietary model providers. TSMC's continued AI chip roadmap, and news that Stanley Druckenmiller has been buying Taiwan Semiconductor, reinforced confidence in the AI infrastructure buildout. The energy angle is also notable: a US-Venezuela oil pact — potentially adding over $200 billion to Venezuela's treasury — is the first significant shift in that bilateral relationship in years; oil services stocks responded with a 3.3% surge, even as WTI crude itself barely moved.
