Observations
Today's setup: The overnight US-China trade announcement on a subset of goods is the dominant driver, but the deal's scope is more limited than it first appears — AI chip export controls and national security provisions are explicitly carved out. The result is a selective risk-on bid: META and communication services surge on AI product momentum, while yields continue to grind higher and the dollar weakens despite those rising rates. US major indices are essentially flat, suggesting the market is weighing the deal's benefits against still-elevated borrowing costs and a Durable Goods miss on both headline and core.
The dollar's decline today despite rising Treasury yields is notable. Normally, rising yields attract global capital into dollar-denominated assets and strengthen the currency. Here, the inverse is playing out: the partial trade deal unwinds some of the uncertainty premium that had been embedded in USD positioning, while Morgan Stanley's reversal of its bullish dollar call adds institutional pressure. When tariff risk recedes, the safe-haven demand that had been propping the dollar compresses — the underlying rate signal is present but is being overwhelmed by the policy shift.
The 10-year Treasury yield is at 5.175%, just fractions below its 52-week high, and the 30-year sits at 5.472% — both at the extreme upper end of recent ranges. At these levels, Treasury yields function as the benchmark cost of capital for the entire economy: mortgage rates, corporate borrowing, and consumer credit all track higher with a lag. Utilities and real estate are absorbing this most visibly — XLU hit its 52-week low today, and XLRE and VNQ remain in the lower third of their annual ranges. The equity risk premium continues to compress for interest rate-sensitive sectors.
META's +4.50% move deserves specific attention. The company launched its Muse AI product lineup today, which reshapes how it competes against Amazon and other AI platform players. The stock is now within roughly $2 of its 52-week high. Gold and silver edged higher (+0.83% and +2.49% respectively) as the dollar weakened, but gold remains in the lower third of its annual range — precious metals have struggled to sustain gains in this high-yield environment even when the dollar softens. Crude oil fell −1.98%, and crude volatility (OVX) has risen over 8% this week, reflecting uncertainty around energy demand in a slowing-growth backdrop.
