004. Personhood Research Group

Hi everyone!

Once again, thanks for joining a few days ago, and here are the meeting notes.

Our next call is Sunday, October 11, 8:00 PDT / 11:00 EDT / 17:00 CEST, in the Protocol Institute Discord, #personhood-research-group channel.

For this session we will read Margaret Radin’s 1982 essay “Property and Personhood,” which is a bit of a return to the legal discussion of personhood, but from a very different angle than what we’ve read previously. It’s a long one - the full text is 59 pages - I’ve prepared an excerpt of about 15 pages. About half of the text (and excerpt) is footnotes, so it’s probably a bit faster to read than it sounds.

For next session, I’ll also prepare some options for what we can read next and do a discord poll to decide together

See you then!

Diagram titled "Pace Layering": six nested curved layers, each with an arrow showing its speed of change. From fastest (outermost) to slowest (innermost): masks, brands, avatars; legal personhood; the moral subject; the social and relational self; sapience; sentience. The outermost arrow is a long tangled squiggle, and the arrows grow shorter, thicker, and straighter toward the innermost layer, indicating progressively slower change.
Here is a meme I made after our last session
