Our next call is Thursday, October 1, 10:00 PDT / 13:00 EDT / 19:00 CEST, in the Protocol Institute Discord, #personhood-research-group channel. Last session I FORGOT the commitment to open with 15 minutes of silent co-reading, and dove immediately into discussion. I’ll try to remember this time!

For this session we will read Marcel Mauss’s “A Category of the Human Mind: The Notion of Person; The Notion of Self.” This is a bit of a departure from the legal domain of the previous two sessions, but is foundational for the subject.

The full text is 13 pages. For those tight on time, I have also made a 6-page excerpt, beginning with Mauss’s discussion of the Latin persona and continuing through the conclusion. The text is from 1938 and opens with a series of ethnographies that have since been criticized, and cites some problematic figures - the excerpt skips this material.
