Issue #34 - The original scrape-everything automation toolkit: still running, still useful, still a LinkedIn ToS violation
What it is
PhantomBuster is a cloud-based platform for data extraction and automation across multiple channels — LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and more. Instead of writing code, you deploy pre-built "Phantoms" or chain them into "Flows" to collect leads, enrich data, and trigger outreach sequences. The core idea: tasks run on PhantomBuster's servers, so you close your laptop and they keep going — which makes it useful for recurring prospecting jobs you don't want to babysit. Think of it as a cloud robot that reads public web pages, extracts structured data, and hands the output to the rest of your stack. It doesn't close deals; it feeds the top of the funnel.
Where it sits in the stack
PhantomBuster lives in the orchestration and data extraction layer — it scrapes and structures data, then pushes it downstream. Once you've scraped your data, you can export to CSV, push it to Google Sheets, or connect to HubSpot and Salesforce via Zapier.
Native integrations also sync LinkedIn with email tools like Instantly and Smartlead, and an MCP server lets you automate tagging, move leads, and manage outreach with AI-powered commands via Claude or your preferred LLM. It most commonly pairs with a sequencer (Instantly, Lemlist, Smartlead) and a CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce), and partially replaces manual Sales Navigator exports or one-off Python scraping scripts.
Three workflows people actually run
1. Sales Navigator list → enriched CSV → sequencer Pull a Sales Navigator search URL, drop it into the LinkedIn Sales Navigator Search Export Phantom. The platform extracts detailed information from LinkedIn profiles — job titles, company names, locations, education, skills — and pulls search results directly from Sales Navigator into spreadsheets with all profile data intact. Feed that CSV into the Professional Email Finder Phantom to append emails. Push the enriched sheet to Google Sheets via native integration, then import into Instantly or Lemlist. A 500-row list with emails takes roughly one execution-hour to build. You still need to verify the emails downstream (ZeroBounce, Millionverifier) — PhantomBuster doesn't have its own email database; it requires external enrichment credits available as bonuses with paid plans.
2. LinkedIn connection → auto-message Flow Chain two Phantoms into a Flow: the LinkedIn Auto Connect Phantom fires first (sends connection requests from a CSV of profile URLs), then the LinkedIn Message Sender Phantom fires on accepted connections. You can automatically send personalized connection requests to targeted profiles with custom messages, and automate message sending to connections or prospects with support for follow-up sequences. Set the Flow to run on a schedule during business hours. Community consensus now sits near 15 to 25 connection requests a day for newer accounts — stay inside that or you will hear from LinkedIn's trust team. One thing to be clear about: there is no conversation automation. PhantomBuster sends messages but does not handle replies. You need human SDRs for actual conversations.
3. Google Maps scrape → local business prospecting list
One real-world use case from a TrustRadius reviewer: "We use the Google Maps feature. This allows us to pinpoint prospects that could use advanced maps services and enter them into targeted email campaigns. It is one of our most important prospecting tools." The Google Maps Search Export Phantom takes a category + location query and outputs business name, phone, website, address, and rating. No LinkedIn account needed, no ToS grey area. Clean the output in Google Sheets, verify emails via Hunter or Apollo, push to your CRM. This is genuinely underused relative to the LinkedIn workflows and carries far lower risk.
What it costs
Current pricing ranges from $69 to $439/month, with annual billing discounts of approximately 19–20% across all tiers. Here's what each plan gets you:
- Starter — $69/mo (≈$56/mo annual): 20 hours/month execution time, 5 Phantom slots, 500 email credits/month.
- Pro — $159/mo (≈$127/mo annual): 80 hours/month execution time, 15 Phantom slots, 2,500 email credits/month, priority support.
- Team — $439/mo (≈$351/mo annual): 300 hours/month execution time, 50 Phantom slots, 10,000 email credits/month, dedicated expert, priority support.
- Free trial: 14 days, no credit card required. You get 2 execution hours, 5 Phantom slots, and 50 email credits. Data exports are capped at 10 rows per result file during the trial.
The gotchas — read these carefully:
-
Three separate resource pools. Slots, execution hours, and email credits are three independent quotas. Run out of hours but have email credits? Locked. Have hours but no emails? Also locked.
-
Hard stops, no overages. When you exhaust execution hours, automations stop entirely until your next billing cycle. There's no option to purchase additional hours mid-cycle. If your team burns through hours on day 20 of a 30-day cycle during a critical campaign, you're either upgrading immediately or pausing outreach for 10 days.
-
No rollover. Unused execution hours, email credits, and AI credits expire monthly. A Starter user consuming 18 hours in November but only 5 in December loses those 13 unused December hours permanently.
-
Starter is tighter than it looks. Starter's 20 hours/month is roughly 40 minutes/day. A typical LinkedIn scraping workflow covering 200 profiles takes 30–60 minutes. You can realistically run one Phantom per day maximum.
Note: Capterra lists slightly different prices ($59/$139/$399). Multiple 2026 sources citing direct vendor verification align on $69/$159/$439 for monthly billing. The discrepancy may reflect promotional pricing or a recent change.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)
Use it if: you're a technical marketer who wants to automate across LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Google Maps — the Phantom library is hard to beat on flexibility. It works well for solo operators and growth teams who are comfortable managing cookies, rate limits, and occasional Phantom breakage, and who need a data extraction layer that feeds other tools rather than an all-in-one outreach suite.
Skip it if: you want a LinkedIn-native outreach tool with built-in safety rails and reply handling. LinkedIn Phantoms run via stored session cookies, which violates LinkedIn's Terms of Service. Account bans are a real outcome at volume, and no configuration eliminates this risk entirely. Also skip it if you're an agency managing dozens of client accounts — managing multiple client accounts and running large-scale campaigns is challenging due to execution time and Phantom slot limitations, and agencies may find it difficult to balance automation needs with cost-effectiveness and risk mitigation. For LinkedIn-only teams, Expandi or Waalaxy carry less account risk. For multi-source enrichment workflows, Clay gives you more data coverage from one credit pool.
