Cubed & Modulations

New Instrument Cubed

Cubed

openDAW has a new instrument. Cubed is a monophonic bass synthesizer with its own step sequencer, built in the spirit of the silver box that started acid house and walked straight into techno.

The original was sold as a practice bass for guitarists with nobody to jam with. It flopped, got discontinued, and ended up cheap in second-hand shops. People bought them anyway, ran the sequencer and grabbed the knobs while it played, and that was acid.

The Random Modulator

openDAW now has modulators. Almost any control in a project can be moved by an LFO, a step sequencer, a random source or a macro fader, and one source can drive many controls at once.

It lands nicely in education too. Students get to throw all sorts of movement at a sound, a slow drift, a sharp rhythmic pulse, anything in between, and hear right away what it does to their music.

Right-click any control, choose Modulate, then New.
